If you don't know a knot, tie a lot.

Right over left, left over right.

You forget the left right left right.
It needs to be at least this pretty and still strong.

Might be time for a break.

Got one side somewhat figured out. Now I need to do it again.

Bowline. Great knot. No matter how tight it gets, you can always untie it. I use it all the time

And not to be trusted. I think the only place I use a square knot is when I reef my mainsail, and then I stop the knot with a loop so it can be easily shaken back out if I need to. Anywhere else I either use a bowline or figure eight (the only knot I used when climbing, tie a figure eight follow through around your swami belt (that's dating myself right there)).
While I know a lot of different knots, I really only use about four in most to least used order: bowline, figure eight, constrictor, half hitch (or lanyard hitch).

Power cinch is a knot I use to lash down tall loads in my pickup. Super useful in achieving a tight lashing

It's good to know some of you are knotty! Between years of sailing, and rock climbing I can really appreciate people who know their knots. Some of the crap that I've seen people tie is embarrassing.

Hang out at Home Depot and watch people try to tie oversized loads to the top of their sedans. What a hoot!!!

The midshipman's hitch (taut line hitch) is a great one for tying down loads. Simple to tie, easy to adjust, and even easier to untie. I use it all the time for lines that require adjusting (under load).

I use a figure eight in the bight as a load cinch with a couple of half hitches to secure it. Easy to tie, easy to adjust, and easy to untie when it's time. I have a friend who's a scout master who can't tie a knot to save his life. I demonstrated how to use the figure eight to tie down loads on his car and he just couldn't figure it out. I've been doing it so long I don't even think about it. His boy isn't much better, I always thought scouts were taught how to tie knots, but maybe not any longer?
In USN boot camp we had to tie the "knot of the day" into a piece of line hanging from the foot of your rack each morning. So many guys couldn't do it, that only two of us were allowed by the company commander to tie everyone's knots for them every morning. I slept on the upper deck, so I did all of them up there, and the other guy who slept on the lower deck did all of those. I always thought they should learn how to do it themselves as that's the point of going to boot camp, to learn new stuff, but I wasn't going to argue with the CC about it. I'm sure the barracks inspection team were astounded to find every single knot looked exactly the same.
