There was rice, yes.

This was not rice.

Only halfway through the pork, I slowed down.

Now, I took the time to kind of stir it up, and actually LOOK at what I was eating.


It was CHOCK FULL of little curly worms!!!


I'm not one to just freak out about this sort of thing.

First thing I noticed was that none of them were moving. So, yeah. They got nuked. Nothing living can live through 6 minutes of microwaves, right?

Ok, so, free, extra protein, right?

I tossed the rest of it, of course.


I thought I was going to be fine.

Yeah, right!

Spent a few hours in agony last night.

Threw up several times.


Finally got to bed and got some sleep.

Still feeling it lower in the guts, today.

So, here's the thing.

Just like the 'salmonella in the dry cereal' questioners, I usually try to figure out how these sorts of things happen.


As I said, I left it in the fridge for 5 days. Not frozen.

But those worms didn't just find their way into that sealed bowl, from some kind of worm fairy in my fridge.

There was either eggs in the pork, that hatched out. Or there were already worms in there, that thawed.


These were obviously the little curly worms that you find in pork. And they had crawled out of the meat in exactly the same way they always do when the meat is cooked. So they were alive when the unopened bowl was put in the microwave.


I know several other people who have eaten the same pork bowls, from the very same batch, even. They didn't see anything. And they weren't bothered by it.

So I am leaning toward, they left the bowl in the freezer and went straight to the mike with it.

With mine, the worms were allowed 5 days to grow.

So when each of us ate the meal, we each got differing amounts of the worms.


But.....

There are worms or worm eggs in the pork, in the cuban inspired pork "Power Bowls"!

Right from the 'factory'. Whether you notice them or not, or are affected or not, you ARE eating them.

Beware.

Wow, that sucks, Jeff! More than likely the eggs were there when it was processed and packed, and the kill step protocol wasn't followed properly. That's more than likely what happened - a breakdown in food safety measures. It would make me very unlikely to ever buy another of their products again. Definitely call them and report it; they need to know before they put out more product that could kill someone with a weak immune system.

Got to do something about that weak stomach of yours.

I've eaten stuff in my lifetime that would make a goat barf. I figure as long as it's cooked to death and doesn't try to crawl off the plate it's OK.

My wife and I used to joke "Just pretend you're camping".


FWIW, I've bought "bowls" like that and a lot do have some strange rice or funny grain that makes little curly bits that could look like worms. As long as they're cooked well and don't move, same as above.


Pork could contain Trichinella Spiralis which can cause Trichinosis if it's not fully cooked. Ditto for Bear, Horses, Rodents and even Humans.
Not common at all in modern pork that's commercially produced. Used to be a big deal when hogs were fed garbage or allowed to range free. (this is why I won't eat any feral hog meat).

And for the record it takes a microscope to see it.

If you ended up with your head in the "Chuck Bucket" it's more likely you let your head take over your stomach.

It's funny that you say that.

I have developed a reputation as the one that can eat pretty much anything.

As long as it doesn't have mold on it, I don't care that it's been in the fridge for two weeks, I'll eat it.

I save on groceries when my friends clean all the out of date stuff out of their pantries.

Ants get in the cereal box? Too bad for them. They get et. I TOLD them to leave my cereal alone or they would get et... So, they get et. They get in the jello box. Too bad. Jello mold with ants.

I won't eat cockroaches and other insects intentionally. But if done unintentionally, I don't get bothered by it.

This was more than just my head. This was gut agony.



Now, I might have a problem with it getting to my head, if they had been alive and squirming when I found them.

But I was fine with it, because what I saw was all obviously dead.

In my head that just made them extra protein. I didn't want to finish it, but I didn't freak that I had already eaten half of it.

The bowls look like they are made from some kind of recycled paper/cardboard.

I got to looking at that, even before cooking it, and wondering what kind of noxious chemicals I was going to be cooking into my food from these.

I keep a bottle of lime juice in the fridge. If I suspect I've caught a food-born illness (or if I AM actually getting food-sick) I'll drink an ounce or two of that lime juice to kill off any of the nasties that have got in me.
