This is just plain inhospitable. Home owner should have offered them a beer, and perhaps a sandwich.

Being in the mudroom (i.e., already inside the house) is no different than being outside the bedroom door trying to get in. And if you're trying to push through my bedroom door . . . well . . . all bets are off.

This.

BG is already in one area of the house, no doubt he'll attempt to continue. B&E is charged as Burglary 1 in WA state which is a felony as Quanstuff pointed out. In the house, already committed a felony, good shoot by the letter of the law.

If you want your rights protected in this state read the law to the letter and leave the wishy washy if/then crap out. BG commits a felony, law says good shoot to prevent a felony, good shoot. That's it.

Could the HO have saved a big headache by just yelling at the BG and scaring them away? Probably, but still a good shoot.

Raises the question too..... whether an attached garage is considered 'inside the house' --- whether the door are opened or closed, isn't still considered 'your dwelling'?

Lots of grey area there....

Few people have an "exterior-strength" lock on the door to the garage. This is a big tactical mistake *if you leave the garage-door opener in your car*...

Yep - that was one of the first things I did when I bought the house --- put a deadbolt and locking knob on the garage door --- it confounded me why they weren't put in in the first place..... it only had a non-locking 'bedroom' door knob for the garage door????? WTF?
