If they're actually using Freon (R-22) it is basically banned and the only way to get it is reclaimed through recycling, so the supply is going down. R-22 prices are getting crazy. If they're using 408A or 410A (I forget what is used residentially now) it is still fairly expensive.

Of course it leaked again. For the second repair (1 day later) they wanted to charge me to come out. Second repair, different guy, re-cut the pipe.
They installed a high end air cleaner which I needed for my mom. Didn't explain that it had to be disassembled for cleaning. I was having them service the furnace. After 5 years, it kept giving me a replace filter warning. Filters are about $90 a pop (large 3 inch thick paper cartridges). I'd replace the filter and 2 days later get a warning. When they came out for servicing, I explained the issue and they (2 -guys) went to look at it. Came back and told me that I'd snagged the filter when I put it in. I was like, I don't think so and I don't think that's the problem. I went down and looked and there was a clean diagonal cut the full length of the brand new filter through the first layer of paper. Looked like someone had taken a utility knife to it.
Called someone else. Guy came out and looked. Came and got me and said - its because the filter has never been cleaned. Turns out you have to disassemble the the air cleaner and vacuum the inside out, you know about once a year. He did it, showed me how to do it. Told me it was so dirty, it would have to be done again in about a week and that I should do it. After that, they'd do it during the annual inspection. Told me a snag or cut on the replaceable air filter would have little or no effect on performance unless it went all the away through because the dirt will just catch on the inner layer.
I just clean it every time I change the air filter now - about every 9-10 months and havne't had a problem since.

This was the place I used https://wantheat.com/ in Tacoma. I was kind of surprised by it all. On the bid, the owner came out himself. Bid was good, but not too cheap as sound an alarm. When I was told I'd be charged for the second repair visit, I called the owner directly and he was very apologetic and that the office had probably just misunderstood. He also told me over the phone that he'd have his best guy out to replace the pipe - free of charge. It seemed like he cared and that his employees just let him down (quality of employees is a constant complaint I have from friends who have businesses). But after the air cleaner problem, he'd had his last chance.
