So been viewing a lot of videos on YouTube of crazy driving incidents caught on camera and got me thinking I'd like to get a dash cam for my ride.
Anyone here running them in their vehicles and have you caught anything good that made it worth having? Maybe some advice on what to look for or avoid?

It logs GPS location, speed, records audio and video. The video player shows the video and your car moving along google maps, it's pretty neat.
So far I witnessed an accident and also saw a few pretty silly things (like an articulating bus u-turn fail). When I witnessed the accident it was great, I just slow rolled up to it, handed a business card to both drivers and said "I recorded it all on video". One of them reached out to me and it probably made his life a lot easier.
I really think that a dual camera system is the minimum these days.
But, for those that want simplicity...The Viofo A119 or the Rexing V1 top my list of most cost effective. Both are available in single or dual camera configurations.
Higher end units get you better quality, GPS, and Wi-fi capability for easy video retrieval. You also get a parking mode in higher end units, which records 24x7, but saves the footage if there's a motion event Ie your car gets hit.
There are also dash cam apps for your smartphone. I used a Note3 as my dash cam for quite a while, and the video quality was great....
I was driving 50k+ miles/yr.... Saved my ass a couple times....
Top guy was nice, luckily it wasn't anything other than a scuff and we stopped for maybe a min and realized no damage was done and shook hands.
The Mercedes driver was another story.. His wife was blaming ME for her husband blindly merging.... Dash cams don't lie.. I won.
I've recorded a couple accidents, and they make things REAL easy....not only for insurance purposes, but prosecution..
Below is what a $30 dash cam looks like...
Be warned though, cameras catch everything, including stupid shit YOU do.... If you try to use camera footage that shows you going 80 in a 60, probably not gonna help your case....I personally don't like GPS sensors.

I have just added one myself as the number of people not keeping it between the mustard and mayo is increasing. On top of that, it usually seems anytime I am pulling my trailer people tend to drive even worse. I opted to keep it simple with a single camera that connects via WiFi. It is a nice feature as while you are driving (but not the driver) you can access footage and it even makes it simple if you want to send a pic or vid from the app.
It uses a simple smartphone app, some bad reviews on the app, but that's due to the developer using an off the shelf product they changed for their camera. Still works very well, and good price for just $50.
Thanx

Alot of good info and bonus that they've come down in price. Nice vids TW! That chick came out with cellphone blazing, although it appears she noticed your cam pretty quick.
Leaning on getting one with the 24/7 record feature, front and back cams. Not really wanting the GPS feature.

So are these camera's auto on/off once they are installed or do you have to activate it every time you get in?
I like the idea of a rear facing as well. I notice more issues with people behind me than in front, and like the suv on 512 in TW's last video, I bet there was stupidity going on behind tw as well for the driver to scoop and squat like they did.

Mine is plugged into a 12v outlet. When I start my car it turns on, when I turn my car off it shuts down.

Ive had a dash cam for a few years now. Only front facing though. Ill probably get a dual facing one for my truck and move this one to the commuter car one of these days.
Mine is wired to the "on" circuit so it only comes on when the truck is running and turns off when the truck is off.
I haven't seen anything to exciting but definitely had some footage that would have been quite nice had events unfolded differently. Last was going over I-90 there was a semi in one of the left lanes doing like 30 uphill. Driver was not staying his lane very well. Moved over to the right to go ahead (going 60) and he veered out of his lane and half way into mine. Thankfully I'd been watching him so was able to swerve myself and avoid him.

I predict these will be standard equipment on cars in a few years

Different cams have various features, but overall yes they will record with power on and continue to do so until they are powered down. Usually they will just overwrite old data with the new.
My cam with a 64gb micro sim will record about 6 hours of data before overwriting. If the "g-sensor" goes off during that time it will protect the event plus 30 seconds before and after the shock to prevent future overwrite.
I directly wired mine into my overhead which makes it so the camera comes on and off with the key. Another nice option my app does is to record with our without sound.
I had looked at the one you have listed, but I opted for a model that didn't have the built in screen. I preferred the Wifi connection rather than have to view on the device itself, just my pref though.

I've read this before but it's worth repeating. Get the one that has a capacitor instead of a battery. Heat is bad for the battery types.
Quote:
Capacitors are more reliable also due to the fact that they are way more resistant to heat; unlike batteries, they don’t pose the risk of overheating and exploding. So, if you are going to use your dashcam in extreme temperature, always go for one that is capacitor based.

I installed a rexing v1. I really like it. I wired it to start and stop with the ignition. 100 bucks on Amazon. Plus a 10 buck hardwire kit and a 5 dollar add a fuse tap.
I made sure the audio was off because I swear at idiot drivers too much Haha. Now that my brand new truck got hit and run in the parking lot I wish I had bought one with parking mode. A rear camera is available which might be in the future.
