Don't look at me.

I thought this thread was going to be about what reload is best against antifa...

I've kind of followed this discussion on several forums, whether or not accurate ammo can be loaded on a progressive press.

The other day I was thinking about how I didn't have any .308 ammo ready for my range session the next day. Looked at my Dillon 650 and said "why not".

I filled the powder reservoir with a pound of Alliant Power Pro 2000 MR, the primer tubes with some Wolf LR primers, the case feeder with some Federal Gold Medal Brass that was once fired (by me).

I removed the primer feed "cam" and ran a few "fill and dump" cases through to make sure the powder measure was dropping accurate charges (+/- .1 gr), replaced the primer feed cam, and proceeded to load 100 rounds using Berger 185 gr Juggernauts in less than 30 minutes.

Next day I shot 20 rounds with my Magnetospeed Chrono in place. Results were astounding with an SD of 6 for the string of 20.

Accuracy downrange was great, giving me numerous 1/2-3/4" groups at 200 yards.

Perhaps not good enough for a Benchrest match for I will use my progressive to load the same components/recipe for my fall trip to Raton where I expect to spend a week on the 1k meter range(s).

Accuracy is not just one thing, it's the sum of several. Starts with the rifle and shooter being the most important. Sorting brass, bullets, weighing every charge down to the last granule are important once the first two factors are handled but even then, if you're shooting at a target the size of a large cabbage out over 800 yards, the rifle and shooter are the biggest factors, especially if you have a load that yields Standard Deviation in speed of 6.

Now if you are a benchrest shooter trying to put all your shots in the same hole you may need to be anal about matching cases, measuring/weighing bullets, etc. But even then none of that matters if the shooter and rifle aren't up to the task.

Back when I was competing in shotgun sports it was amazing how many times the guys on the line with their multi-thousand dollar custom shotguns were "schooled" by old-timers with old Winchester Model 12's or Remington 870's that they also used when they went duck hunting.

Back to progressives, the largest issue is the powder measure. Load stick powders and you may have issues with even charge weights. Load ball type powders (like the PP2000 MR and others) and it's like metering water. Same amount comes out of the measure every time. Replace the progressive powder measure with a funnel, weigh charges with a chargemaster, and remember to only add powder when the case is UP, you can get super accurate loads with the difficult to measure powders too. (I average 100-150 per hour when using the scale/funnel method.
