These are unidentified remains and as such the Nationality of each remains is unknown. So as a sign of respect the U.N. flag was draped over them. They are supposed to be the remains of U.S. soldiers but that cant be confirmed till testing is done.

Thank you for responding. That actually makes sense. I was pissed that our flag was not covering the coffins but, now I have a better understanding of why.

I was a little confused at first as well but once I looked into a bit more realized why and it makes sense.

Even if it were 100% known they were US remains they would have the UN flag until they were turned over to purely US forces. The UN was the combatant in Korea (because the USSR had a temper tantrum and boycotted they couldn't veto the use of force), not the US... Yes we provided most of the troops, but the UN was technically the one in command. It's the reason the Army colors have "UN Offensive XXX" as battle streamers.
The remains were turned over to the UN forces (on paper), who then will turn them over to the US.

There were British, Canadian, Australian, and other western European contingents in Korea, including a Turkish unit that took many casualties when the Chinese got into the war, pushing us back across the 38th parallel. They all took casualties, and had people die in POW camps. These remains are probably ours, but Unicorn has it right, this was, and remains a UN operation. There is a large, and beautiful UN cemetary in Pusan that commemorates it.

Today, as the coffins were taken off the plane in Pearl Harbor...

They were all draped with American Flags :patriot:
