My husband of 50 years did not have to stifle a laugh. He took it dead seriously. He did not defend his remark, he did not defend men. He sat, hunched and hurt, and he listened. For a moment, it occurred to me to be grateful that I’m married to a man who will listen to a woman. The winds calmed ever so slightly in that moment. And then the storm surge welled up in me as I realized the pathetic impotence of nice men’s plan to rebuild the wreckage by listening to women.

I thought them not getting any was why they were so angry all the time.

When I was growing up, I thought that a feminist was feminine...
Then I learned a little more, and I figured that feminists were trying to change unfair things to make them fair.
Sounded great so far. I like when things are fair.

Then a few more years go by, and I come to the realization that to be a -real- feminist, there's supposed to be some anger involved.
Alrighty. Maybe being calm wasn't working.

Now it seems that there is a level of mind-boggling rage necessary for true feminism. Rage so powerful, that a thoughtful, kind and patient husband of 50 years must sit, "hunched and hurt", as his life partner verbally crushes what soul is left inside him after 5 decades with a woman like that.
