5-4 decision from nearly 40 years ago...

Sounds like anything but set in stone.

Then we should probably change the quote at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Might as well just remove the whole statue entirely I guess.
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

Yeah, That was then ...this is now.

The Liberals remove all other statues, flags etc. that commemorate History that needs erased.

Fukit!

Controlled Immigration Law isn't a NEW thing....

No law against you moving a family into your house. Meet them at the border.

I'm sure Border Patrol has all the paper work for you to legally adopt them.

The difference being we didn't have widespread narco-terrorism back then.

Repeat that crap to an angel-mom and see the reaction you get.

Yes, at the base of the Statue of Liberty, adjacent to Ellis Island. Where your poor huddled masses came in to be interviewed, placed, vaccinated and registered prior to admittance. You had to have a reason to be here, and show proof that you were going to be able to support yourself and make a contribution to Making America Great. Where if you were sick, or had no plan, you were detained and shipped back home.

Try again?

Pretty sure that inscription was applicable while all the immigrants were LEGALLY seeking to become citizens of the US, while undergoing vetting of the period. And yeah...I'm sure the statue offends someone on the left. Better remove it.

Spoken like someone who truly did not understand the original process of getting into America via Ellis Island. My Dad's family was on one of those boats..

Yep same here...And my ancestors eagerly embraced the laws, customs and culture of their "new country" and spoke reverently about the "old country" as a place of tradition, but without the opportunity for a better life of the "new country".

Well you don't base sweeping immigration policy based on a quote on a statue. Oh, and there's about a million actual quotes in the LAWS of our nation that this conveniently ignores.

And, by the way, I'm tired and poor. As are MOST Americans who are here. Let's worry about Americans for a change.

Edited to add: The world's population is about 7,000,000,000. That's seven billion people. Most - probably like 95%, live in "poverty" by American standards. There are complex reasons but they stem around ignorance, inability to govern, backwards thinking, illiteracy, deep socio-economic problems, violence, crime, unwillingness to motivate themselves to a better world, etc.

America's population is 320,000,000. If we took in 1/2 of the world's population, the Americans who are here now would be outnumbered 10 to 1, we'd have socio-economic problems straight out of a nightmare hellish landscape, we'd speak 15 different languages and be unable to communicate with illiterate backwards thinking masses who demand resources and cannot even grasp western civilization concepts... and we'd be the most crowded nation in the world by far.

I've been to 3rd world nations that have desperate poverty. They are filthy, trashed, hellholes with 1/2 naked people standing around doing nothing. Depressingly desperate poverty that we can do almost nothing about. We'd end up with millions and millions and millions of people sleeping on the streets, destroying our landscape, predisposed to crime, welfare, sucking our nation's resources totally dry.

Do you want that world?

Exactly. Thank you!!

Immigrants from that era came here for OPPORTUNITY TO WORK, CONTRIBUTE, AND BUILD THE AMERICAN DREAM AND MAKE AMERICA BETTER.

Immigrants today largely come here for FREE HEALTHCARE, WELFARE, SCAMS, BIRTH TOURISM, DRUG SMUGGLING, SEX TRAFFICKING, GANGS, ID THEFT, AND SOME WANT TO DO US DIRECT HARM FROM TERRORISM.*

*See 9/11/01. 3000 dead Americans, a trillion dollars in damages, destroyed buildings, hijacked planes, led to global wars, changes in our laws, and 10 trillion in added debt...
#neverforget. But it seems so many have forgotten that these were foreigners who did that.

And who says they're yearning to be free? They may not like where they're from but I bet freedom is way down the list of reasons.

Free stuff isn't freedom.

from the bottom of this loooong ass article

Quote:
President Trump has at least two routes to victory through a legal fight. It must be noted for both that a legal challenge to an executive order issued in November 2018 would almost certainly not make it all the way to petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court until after the cutoff in mid-January 2020 for cases to be decided before the presidential election, so this issue will likely still be pending when Americans go to the polls in November 2020 to vote for president.

The first route to victory is that the Supreme Court could hold that the specific provisions of the executive order are authorized under current statute. If so, President Trump wins outright.

The second is that the Court could hold that one or more of those provisions require congressional action, but could signal that the Constitution permits such changes. If so, there would be a massive push to tweak current statute. The American people will have been debating this issue for two full years by that time, and would by 2021 be educated by the Supreme Court’s final decision as well. This could lay the groundwork, such that the same political momentum that would secure a second term for President Trump could also secure the votes to change the relevant provision of Congress’s Immigration and Nationality Act.

All this would be happening as the president continues to appoint federal judges who believe the Constitution must be interpreted according to its original public meaning. President Trump may well have a third Supreme Court vacancy before this matter is argued before the justices, securing even more a reliable originalist majority on the Court.

President Trump has elevated a national discussion on an extraordinarily important issue that has been building for decades. He appears to be shaping the very battlefield on which he will fight, on a matter that tens of millions of voters care about deeply.
