Watch out for the super cheap ones and I hate to say it the AMD cpu's. I have always been an AMD fan, but the last laptop (Lenovo) I bought with an AMD chip has been a dog. Family internet usage or not, it is slow and gets frustrating fast waiting for things to load, I only use the laptop for when I travel to get on the net for email and forums like here...

Plus some of the keyboards are not very solid/robust. to the point if you get typing too fast you get double strikes, and mis-strikes. As bad as my typing is, on my laptop it becomes almost unreadable due to the keyboard.

Well they have them in stock and should be on display so I can check it out first.
I've always like AMD????????

Mee too, this one is a dog. Could be something with what Lenovo did, but it was a cheap laptop, so can't really expect it to perform well.

I guess the point is, with a bottom of the line laptop they may not perform well to teh point that even internet surfing gets affected, so just be aware..

Unless she doesn’t use it much don’t buy a cheap ass laptop. I had had excellent luck with everything Dell I have ever owned. My last one was a 12 inch XPS I paid 1200 for in 2007. I just retired it a few months ago. If a computer only last 2-4 years these days you shouldn’t have bought it. My dell pc is 11 years old and going strong. You will be frustrated with a cheap computer. Oh and my wife loves her Surface.

Ex's wifes daughter bought a cheap ass Lenovo for $300 on a black Friday sale.
Was so slow she couldn't even login and do her college courses.

I usually check out Ben before I buy stuff for customers.

Bought a few of these for a customer a few weeks ago at Costco.

I usually go Dell, but selection was limited because they wanted 17.3" screens.

I have a 9 year old Dell Inspiron that has Windows 7 installed. It has never failed me, not once. I have backpacked it around Europe, the ME, and the U.S. It serves reliably and while my wife's laptop with 10 installed is locked up over yet another auto update, I continue working.

I bought a 13" Lenovo and it is the slowest POS ever. It is basically an online radio now- nothing else.

OK, I did ask for help so this is all good.
This one seems good enough.

Looks pretty good.

You might consider looking at some one or two levels up that include an Solid State HD (In addition to the regular HD) which is used as a giant cache for the most part to speed startup times. It's amazing how much of a difference this makes and if you can find an Inspiron that has one for only a few bucks more it would be worth it.

Also, Memory (RAM) in a computer is like Ammo for an AR-15. There is no such thing as 'too much".

Costco has a bunch on sale through the holidays. I don't have it in front of me, but there's a flyer with different periods maybe through Christmas?

My ASUS that I bought back in 2012 is still going.

The XPS I had made it another year with an SSD upgrade. I put it in my dell desktop when I moved it from the house to the shop. I believe the SSD is the reason the desktop is working well for me after 11 years. The 11 year old harddrive was just worn out I think.

SSD will usually speed it up quite a bit.
Customers give me their old laptops when they upgrade or have a drive failure.
If the CPU has a Passmark score of 6,000 or better, I put a 256G SSD in them, bump up the RAM, throw a new OS on them and use them for loaners or give to friends.
Older ones we recycle of use for camping DVD players.

XPS is Dell's premier line, and actually is pretty good, although I'd never get one...

SSDs make a world of difference... I wouldn't get a laptop without one.

I'd say a minimum current gen i5 with a min 1gb dedicated graphics card.... I think that's doable @ $700...

My Dell Inspiron 15-7559 with all the above however with an i7 processor was $700 from Amazon.

Graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M that only supports 4 Mb of memory. It's proven more than enough for anything I throw at it.

Get a 1000-series geforce, not 900. Here's a cheap option:
