I'm not a lawyer or a CPA, didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, blah blah…

But I went to make a first purchase from Academy (good price on some ammo w/ free shipping) this evening and was surprised that my cart showed I was being charged sales tax. They have no physical presence in WA, so I decided to use the handy-dandy chat option and ask them about it. After doing a bit of a dance, the unknown CS just said they are required to charge tax in states where they sell over a certain amount of product. I have never heard of such a thing and wanted to cry foul straight away, but know I could be wrong so wanted to ask if anyone here knows the true 411 on this?

Well, in general it's true that out-of-state companies are now required to charge WA sales tax. Yeah, that blows.

Some are doing it, some are not.

What is the "now" that you describe, and when did it happen? I'm not doubting it, but looking for info.

One of the laws that was passed by our lovely democrats and liberal nuts un Olympia and is signed by looney Inslee.
I would have to look it up but technically if you are doing more than I think it was $10,000 of sales in a year you are supposed to be charging sales tax and remit tot he state.

Well, dang it, it wasn't at the top of the page, but it really wasn't too far down the google results. My bad for not searching more first.

Still seems like it would be hard to enforce. I wonder how WA could subpoena their business records if they refused to comply?

Yes. I noticed it when I made my last purchase from Oakley SI. Then noticed Amazon doing it as well. Midway does not charge tax. Brownells does.

It has begun to play a factor in who I will order from on-line. Thankfully my two most often used ammo suppliers, Target Sports USA and SG Ammo do not tax me as of yet.

Yeah, I bought a $650 gun part a couple months ago and actually did a jig because when I finished the invoice they didn't charge tax. ($65) :thumbsup2:

I just bought a $175 optic from Optic Planet and got taxed..free shipping though. I Found a 10% off coupon on line that helped.

Unfortunately, they do :(

Just bought some of the Federal 9mm black bulk box since PSA was out and was charged sales tax. Still a great price on 9mm target ammo though.

Yeah, out of state taxes are dumb. Though I Still saved 25 bucks vs PSA on 5 boxes of the black 22lr.
