damn, gotta give it to the French, they're throwing a pretty good fit over a 25 cent/gallon fuel tax raise
i'd bet money on that if we get hit with something like that we'll just take it in the ass...
not sure if it's a good or bad thing these folks aren't armed icon_eek

Quote:
French police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators in Paris on Saturday, as thousands gathered in the capital and beyond and staged road blockades to vent anger against rising fuel taxes.
Thousands of police were deployed nationwide to contain the eighth day of demonstrations in which two people have been killed since they started Nov. 17 as protests against tax. But the demonstrations have quickly morphed into a rebuke of President Emmanuel Macron’s tenure and the perceived elitism of the French ruling class.
Quote:
There were no immediate reports of injuries, but 18 were detained for various acts including for “throwing projectiles,” Paris police told The Associated Press.

“It’s going to trigger a civil war and me, like most other citizens, we’re all ready,” said Benjamin Vrignaud, a 21-year-old protester from Chartres.

“They take everything from us. They steal everything from us,” said 21-year-old Laura Cordonnier.
Quote:
Taxes on diesel fuel have gone up seven euro cents (nearly eight U.S. cents) and are to keep climbing in the coming years, Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne has said. The tax on gasoline is to increase 4 euro cents. Gasoline currently costs about 1.64 euros a liter in Paris ($7.06 a gallon), slightly more than diesel.

“When tax is no longer agreed to, it’s the start of revolutions in France,” far left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon told BFMTV.

Gas is like $6/gallon there

What’s another 25 cents?

Death by a thousand cuts

I love how the rioters are all, by and large, wearing safety reflective vests. Hey, doesn't matter if you're going to burn cars in front of the Arc d'Triomphe, safety first!

While that's funny GG, I'm guessing it's like the Fascist Antifacists here who wear their hoodies and masks as a group identification (so you know whom to punch and not).

I guess the "Eurabia" moniker is an accurate characterization of what France and Europe largely are becoming. Soon it will look like Allepo?

We here in WA and I assume a wider area, have suffered great swings in gas pricing of late, with the spike in prices after the Vancouver pipeline explosion being the latest example. Prices in my area have risen by at least .30 and I haven't witnessed any reflective vest wearing activists or tire burning street protests.

I don't think that the riots are over a 25 cent price jump...
The nature of the cost is what is irritating them : regressive .Gov taxation.

Macron is sitting on a powder keg and lighting a cigarette. Maybe nothing bigger will happen, or maybe the French people will buck under the heavy load of socialism and invasion that they are suffering.

does anyone else find it extremely hypocritical that the far left in France is opposed to tax increases? Who the F did they think was going to pay for their phony global warming agenda???

Its because all drivers are required to carry them. From the BBC:

All drivers in France have to carry the vests in their cars as part of safety equipment for use in a breakdown.

Along with the familiar red reflective triangle which must be placed behind a broken-down vehicle on the side of a road, the high-visibility vest - or "gilet jaune" - must be worn by the driver outside the car.

Failure to wear the vest after a breakdown or accident can result in a €135 (£120; $153) fine under a law introduced in 2008.

This protest is a big deal because it wasn't organized by a group. I know a lot of my friends were surprised he won against Le Pen, especially when he won by a huge majority but his popularity has been falling ever since.

Too late, the French already surrendered their balls long ago. These riots are meaningless when their populace is disarmed. Hell, Macron straight up said he's not going to allow a EU leave referendum because he thinks it would pass. And his approval rating is 25%. And he's still there...

I posted about this and a buddy of mine gave me some mumbo jumbo about climate change and how it will cost billions to economies world wide. But wait what did that have to do with unwanted taxation? Another American who would bend over and take it. Apply lube liberally sir.

https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/12/04/macron-blinks-french-prime-minister-to-announce-suspension-of-fuel-tax/

Quote:
Philippe is to announce a suspension of fuel tax hikes, a major U-turn in an effort to appease a protest movement that has radicalized, French media reported Tuesday.

Both Le Monde newspaper and France Info radio said the planned increase, which has provoked riots, will be suspended for several months. Philippe is also expected to announce other measures aimed at easing tensions, just three weeks after claiming that the government would not change course and remained determined to help wean French consumers off polluting fossils fuels.

Philippe will make an announcement later Tuesday to legislators from President Emmanuel Macron’s party. There was no immediate comment from his office Tuesday morning.

It’s unlikely Philippe’s announcement will put an end to the road blockades and demonstrations, with more possible protests this weekend in Paris.

“It’s a first step, but we will not settle for a crumb,” said Benjamin Cauchy, one of the leaders of the protests.

After a third consecutive weekend of clashes in Paris led by protesters wearing distinctive yellow traffic vests, Philippe held crisis talks with representatives of major political parties on Monday. He also met with Macron and other ministers in order to find a quick solution to the crisis.

Facing the most serious street protests since his election in May 2017, Macron has canceled a two-day trip to Serbia to stay in France this week.

I dunno. Seems like plenty of balls to do this.

Or are you talking about their 9x21mm stupidity gun laws?

My wifes best friend moved to France with her husband four years ago when he had the opportunity to open a branch over there. They are in a nice flat, nice view, all within a little section of bars and places to eat. Fast forward to when all the migrants started flowing in, things changed. They now have security 24 hours a day at their building, she doesn't feel safe to walk out at night alone all due to being groped, harassed, and followed, and now this.

She talked to her on Sunday and they are making arrangements to move back to the states by February.
