Where will all these trucks and SUV's be made? Could it be MEXICO?

General Motors said Monday it plans to dramatically cut production at a number of plants in the U.S. and Canada next year and reduce its salaried workforce by 15 percent in a massive restructuring that will cost up to $3.8 billion.

The automaker plans to reduce its salaried workforce by 15 percent, reducing its executive staff by 25 percent.
It is part of a massive restructuring that will cost up to $3.8 billion.
The UAW responds by vowing to use "every legal, contractual and collective bargaining avenue" to fight the changes.

The affected plants and the vehicles they make are:

Detroit-Hamtramck and Oshawa make the Chevy Impala.
Detroit-Hamtramck is the sole producer of the Cadillac CT6, Chevy Volt, and Buick LaCrosse.
Lordstown makes the Chevy Cruze sedan.
Oshawa is the only plant that builds the Cadillac XTS sedan.
The move by General Motors follows similar shifts by Fiat-Chrylser and Ford. U.S. automakers are shifting production away from sedans and smaller vehicles in favor of cross-over SUVs and trucks, reflecting the preferences of U.S. buyers. In recent years, consumers purchases have increasingly been concentrated in the larger vehicle market.

This election was a real blow to the economy, which actually for the first time in 18 years was starting to roll again. These leftist termites and never Trumpers are destroying every good thing that was happening

That's what happens when you have people in power who don't really care about outsourcing and moving factories abroad. Not surprising when the commander in outsourcing has his suits and ties made overseas.

Lots of facets to this

When the economy is doing well people buy bigger vehicles. This plant made the Cruz, a small car that competes with a plethora of import cars

Unions still don't seem to understand that labor is a commodity. The market doesn't care how much it costs you to live, it cares how much it costs to bring a product to market

The factory is not shut down. It's an asset that they will bring online again. They just have to retool for a product that has more appeal

I haven't seen any indication that GM plans on moving production elsewhere... Did I miss that?

If GM is doing this because those workers are not generating a profit for the company, aren't they doing exactly what they should do?

President Donald Trump ripped General Motors CEO Mary Barra for closing car plants in Ohio, Michigan, and Maryland, threatening their government subsidies.

“Nothing being closed in Mexico & China,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get!”

Trump said he would discuss cutting subsidies for General Motors in response to the news.

“We are now looking at cutting all General Motors subsidies, including for electric cars,” he wrote. The news sent General Motors stock shares into a tailspin, despite earning as much as five percent in trading after the closures were announced on Monday.

Trump scolded General Motors for investing in China and Mexico rather than the United States.

“General Motors made a big China bet years ago when they built plants there (and in Mexico) – don’t think that bet is going to pay off,” he wrote. “I am here to protect America’s Workers!”

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow explained to reporters on Tuesday that Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were “disappointed” in the decision — despite the new USMCA trade deal that was reached.

Actually, they are freeing up cash to try to restructure the company. They will have billions to move into the self driving craze. Personally, I don't get it.

The car companies, and current ride sharing services like Uber, think you will stop buying cars and will instead just summon a service to take you anywhere you want to go. You'll pay with a subscription or by the mile, making far more money for the car owner while supposedly (!) saving you cash.

Ford is also looking to free up cash to make the necessary investments to be ready in 10-20 years, and may even do a venture with Volkswagen.

Depends on where the wind is currently blowing.

If its politically fesable, you rant and rave that they are exporting jobs. If you are currently pandering WELL YA GOTTA MAKE A BUCK, they are doing the right thing.
