They busted one carrier awhile back that trained his dog to sniff for cash, dumped the mail on his apartment floor and the dog found all the cards from Grandma with $5 bills in them. They usually get caught. Postal inspectors can look at a route map and see who has an inordinate amount of undelivered mail.

A week before a United States Postal Service employee will be sentenced for stealing mail in Milwaukee County, another worker here has been found guilty of the same act.

Thomas P. Gunderson of Franklin pleaded guilty to embezzlement of mail matter on Nov. 29 and will be sentenced at a later date, according to online federal court records.

He could face five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The latest mail theft comes on the heels of two local cases involving U.S. Postal Service workers.

Ebony L. Smith, 20, of Milwaukee admitted to stealing more than 6,000 greeting cards filled with cash and checks in Wauwatosa from April 2017 to January 2018. As part of a plea deal, Smith pleaded guilty Sept. 12 to theft or receipt of stolen mail; she was scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 14 but that hearing was recently changed to Feb. 8.

A buddy of mine while growing up had an uncle who was a mailman for 25+ years who happened to develop a helluva cocaine habit. As his addiction grew, so did the number of missing mail items on his route. The USPS caught wind, and set him up with some fake birthday cards containing marked cash and giftcards.

Hook, line and sinker and he lost absolutely everything.

Wouldn't be worth it to risk a lifetime career over a few bucks.

Worse was the guy in the Tukwila Distribution Center. He had a pension for relatively heavy Small FRB. And somehow he REALLY liked out bound Int'l SFRB. All very hush-hush, but they caught his ass.
