All my dogs have been from pups, raised by me.

Most rescues are great, but Ive seen a few that are head cases. My sister has one thats a skiddish, thinks everything is a threat, monster.
Like shopping for a wife at the battered womens shelter. Never know, might be some potential in there! lol.

I vote puppy and raise it your way. I just seen a sign for mini pinschers at my local grocery store.

Breed rescue. SPDR is a good place to start. I of course work with the National Great Pyrenees Rescue. No dog adopted through a legit rescue is going to be free--the dogs adopted out through NGPR run ~475 once the transport fee is included--but they'll come fully vetted with a house inspection (and yard inspection in the case of Pyrs) and your dollars are going to help other dogs out of perfectly horrid conditions.

There are a couple of "rescues" to avoid at all costs. If all they care about is how much you'll pay, turn tail and run. Just saying.

I second that, we just love our King Charles Cavalier.
