Good. Whats the point in a school lunch menu that kids wont eat? It's been years since my kids would buy lunch at school. When I was at high school they had the 'fast line' in the cafeteria. Milk shakes and cheeseburgers. Its what kids eat. If they eat too much, need to throw some parenting up in that motherfucker and not depend on the school to control their diet. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/08/us/t ... -usda.htmlThis week, the United States Department of Agriculture announced its final plans to lower nutrition standards for grains, flavored milks and sodium in school cafeterias that were part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and that Michelle Obama, the former first lady, had advocated. The changes, all of which will go into effect by July, apply to school meals that qualify for at least some federal reimbursement. They may seem relatively minor on paper, but like many Trump administration moves to reverse Obama-era policies, they come with some controversy.

I'm not a fan of this. I think child obesity is a huge problem in the US. Most parents are lazy fucks who feed their kids fast food for all other meals of the day, so having them get a healthy option, to me, is a decent plan.
While I agree that the menu could be more diversified, I think rolling It back isn't a good plan.

While I agree that obesity is a big issue, trying to play Mastermind and dietary nanny with tax dollars is not the way to fix it.
The real answer is a complex realignment of our economy to be truly less manipulated and more free market. And no, this doesn't apply to Trump's tariffs as his tariffs are retaliatory and meant to eventually encourage free market behavior from those nations they are targeting.

Well to have the real world viewpoint... you need to eat it and watch the kids at lunch.
I have had the pleasure of having lunch with my son at his elementary and ate the lunch provided to the kids.
I saw tons of it just being wasted because it was simply not eaten.
It was okay but when I am paying for it and it’s not enjoyed and most of it goes down the trash... it’s not working folks.
Obesity is a big issue. But remember why lots of kids are getting heavy - besides the food intake. The simple lack of getting the fuck out of the house and running around the neighborhood.
Computer games, internet and tv have coupled our kids to a stagnet lifestyle.
Hey I see it all the time. My 6 year old is outside, I’m outside too. It’s amazing to see I am actually the only adult outside with my child. I see older kids but the younger ones are stuck inside and I get it. It’s a pain to just tag along.

Schools do need to provide healthy options, but kids need to eat it. I see more food being wasted because...well...kids are picky. I remember when I was a kid and the meals were made from scratch in house. That changed by the time I got to high school. Kids loved having hot lunch when I was a kid, because the meals were good. My grandmother and aunt were both school lunch ladies and cooked all the meals from scratch for their school, which still makes meals from scratch. Making home cooked meals can be done well, nutritional, and cheap. Plus some kids aren't getting meals from scratch at home. They would love to have some good home cookin'.
There are ways to make things healthy for students, and also tasty too, but pre-made stuff doesn't help. Some of these pre-made foods that kids get in school lunches are flavorless, bland, or have weird texture. So they get left un-eaten because kids are picky. Just because they are kids doesn't mean we have to give them crap either.
Another issue schools are facing are all the ranging dietary needs kids seem to have these days. If your child has dietary restrictions or needs, you the parent should be providing those meals. I know that can't always happen due to financial situations, but those restrictions start to drive the show and everyone gets stuck with the same restricted meals.
On the flip side, you take a good look at what students are bringing from home and things aren't much better. It is either full of sugar or just junk food. I have one student who just brought a bag of chips for lunch the other day. Another had just three puddings. Parents need to be educated on healthy options as well.
I still think getting back to home cooked meals in schools would be a better option than what is going on now.

Healthy choices start at home. I'm not sure what I really think about this.

While I agree that the menu could be more diversified, I think rolling It back isn't a good plan. I have some niece's who will never choose the healthy option. Parent's are as your description says. These kids will not eat better at school. Reforming the Welfare system away from the junk and to vegetables and better quality stuff would be the better start.
