My buddy got one used. After a few weeks they had to take it to the shop cause it wouldn’t run or some bs, was there for months, had to fly in a special Mercedes tech and reprogram the computer. Finally got it back and was in the middle of a 5 car no stop pile up on the freeway, he was fine, most cars had barely any damage but the smart car was totaled.
So he bought a Fiat 500, I bought my daughter a Fiat 500, and my wife has a Brand New loaded 500x. Can get over 40mpg, they have the Abarth that is a turbo racer model that seems bad ass. Has a back seat, maintenance seems easy and cheaper as it’s Mopar, don’t know about anything for crash ratings as not one of us has wrecked one yet, they have a quirky Italian styling that is love it or not, most the futures are pretty cool. The small size is awesome for tight spaces and I don’t mind them on he freeway, I enjoy hauling ass and passing people with it.

Looks like the idea of owning a smart car isn't so smart.

They make some cool, ‘cartoony’ body kits for them. Even a Tank Kit!

Was a hard ride, gutless, but it did get over 50 MPG and handled great in the snow. Kinda wish we kept it just for parking downtown Seattle. I had a 75 diesel rabbit. The drivers side engine mount.... Was a bolt through the sheet metal of the wheel well. Yeah, it rocked and rattled a lot! Kind of wish I had it today, though. From what I know now, I could fab up a much better engine support system, and get rid of most of the other problems I had with it as well.
