Protocol For Disposing of A Damaged US Flag.

Wed Jan 09, 2019 3:31 pm

Hi folks,

I’m ashamed to admit that I forgot to bring Old Glory inside during our recent wind storm. (I would leave it flying at night as I have a light shining on it). It’s in tatters. Can anyone advise me as to the proper way to lay it to rest?

Thanks,

-Breck

You can take it to a Vfw hall and they will make sure it's retired properly

Boy Scout troops will do it for you as well. I have a couple I need to retire.

Alternatively, we could have a nice little ceremony complete with good American bourbon...

I hadn’t seen that before now. Great info. Thanks.

Not sure I could burn an American flag.
I know it is a proper disposal method, but don't know if I could do it.

I'd take it to a VFW hall. Figure those guys would take care of it respectfully.

If it's in your area of operations...
VFW has a drop box for flags at the Issaquah senior center, it's behind city hall. Drop box is located outside the south entrance to the senior center.

I folded countless numbers of flags during my stent in the military.
For two months while I was awaiting my unit to return from Reforger in Germany (77), I was stationed at Fort Logan, Colorado for burial duties. We had to always dress sharp, keep eyes forward & work in unison during the whole presentation service.
It was a very fulfilling Duty to provide a service to those that served their country. Sa you prolly know first hand that funerals are a time of grieving by the family's and sometimes was very very emotional.
There were a few times when we deviated from this rendition but only to have tears roll down our cheeks, never flinching or wiping them in public, we were very professional about our duties.

Well, he's been known to dispose of a flag.

He's also good friends with the local firefighters.

What an honor it must have been Jim, despite the difficulties. Thank you for your service.

Yeah, and I retired that flag per the code properly. I made sure it was done right and with the proper respect for the flag.

The firefighter? Well, that had nothing to do with it.

Plus, he was a dick......dick.
