My son works for Aero and I asked him about what kinds of defects rise to the level that gets items blemed. He said he isn't in a position to know all the details, but that there are numerous small imperfections that can occur. Starting with something as simple as a piece being dropped onto the concrete floor, to small imperfections in the machining or deburring processes. He said the vast majority of issues are caught before anodizing (or cerakote), are corrected as best as possible, if possible, and then anodized / cerakoted. Whatever the finish, it usually covers up small blems very well, but they will still sell them as blems. Of course any defects that would affect performance of the part would be scrapped.
Hope that helps a bit.

I have one of their blem stripped uppers as part of one of my "working guns".
Gun is perfect. Never could find the blem.
