A friend of Rita's recommended these things for traction in snow and ice. I didn't think much of them, until I tried them during this ice storm and now I'm sold. We got a pretty good icing in this last storm, and watching my dog trying to navigate in 4x4 on iced over snow convinced me to give these a try. It's like having chains for your shoes, no slipping, even on solid ice, very impressive. All of the paths I'd shoveled and spread salt on, were two foot wide skating rinks. Even spreading more salt made no appreciable difference, but at least I felt steady with these on my shoes.
