The backstory was pretty much Henry Ford II getting the shaft from Enzo Ferrari and then developing his own race program.

Bit more detail... Enzo Ferrari was majorly into racing but hated the consumer side (ie selling to normal people). Built up an awesome race program that won Le Mans and tons of races in the early-mid 60's. But company never really did well consumer wise...basically enough to fund the race program and thats it. Ford wanted to add a sports car to the line up (they had none in the early 60s) and Enzo Ferrari was looking to sell day to day Ferrari. So Ford went to Ferrari, spent millions audting and negotiating. Had a deal pretty much lined up and then Enzo just walked away over Ford having control of the budget and decisions of the Ferrari Race Program. Ferrari then sold a majority stake to Fiat instead. Enzo said some stuff towards Ford (both Henry Ford II and Ford in general). That pissed Henry Ford II off who then went and started the Ford GT40 program with pretty much the sole purpose of beating Ferrari.

Obviously the short version but gives the gist of the backstory.

The last movie I saw like this was Rush (2013 film).
I was literally glued to the screen.

Ford didn't just beat Ferrari, they embarrassed them, they beat everyone for 3 or 4 years in a row, Ferrari dropped out and then Ford figured they proved their point

If the movie is done right, then it seems like it would be a worthwhile watch.

Matt Damon as Shelby ruins it for me.

At least someone believable.

I wanna see this one too. The tidal wave of remakes and superhero movies lately is getting really old.

If they really drive into the nuances that some old stories talk about.... Could be awesome.
If it's all....."hollywooded" out, not so much.

After embarrassing themselves they did. But not having seen the movie and only going off previews I didnt want to "spoil" anything. The trailer makes it seem (to me) that itll start around the time of the deal going south and Ford starting their program and then the "meat" of the movie being once Shelby came aboard.

It is pretty cool...and a bit depressing though....that this time period had the only All-American car to win Le Mans. The MKIV was designed, built, all components (engine/tires/ect), and drivers/crew were American

Detroit muscle! Love it!

I have to agree with Sinus, the endless buffet of tired remakes, sequels, and superhero films is so boring. Finally something interesting.
