3 out of 5 stars for today

I've shot there handful of times in the past and today I went in to test fire two pistols that I've been working on. The check-in process was fine until I was asked to allow clerk to check that the firearms were clear. Both pistols are in one soft case. He pulls out the 1911-A1 to check it and says, "This must be brand new." I inform him that it's been shot in and I just need to test fire it because I fitted the threaded barrel for a guy. He checks that it's clear and then proceeds to keep softly racking the slide using the front serrations and says, "You might find that it's too sticky." I laughed at him and informed him that I do this for a living and that's it's supposed to be that tight. "Do what? Fit things?", he replies. I inform him that I'm a smith, Black Hammer Arms in beautiful East Tacoma. He puts the gun away after reading the tag I had on the gun.

Also during check-in I'm told that I have to buy at least one target and what that $1.50 covers. I already have a stack of targets with me in plain sight. OK. I buy a target and move on with my life.

I get my PPE on and get on to the range. It's nice as always. First gun is the 1911. 20'. Two rounds in the mag. Bang Bang. Load a full mag. Bang x7. Load another mag +1. Load the gun, and now it's time to pop off rounds faster. I'm shoot faster than one round per second for this mag. All shots are in a 8" circle.
The RSO says to me, "shoot a little slower." I respond with, "OK." Two more mags and I call it good. Picked up my brass that I could find.

Next I bring in the target, put on new targets that I brought and run the target out to 10' for the .25 acp Colt Vest Pocket. Staple gun is out of staples and the RSO loads me back up. Thanks. I run a mag through the Colt and he tells me, that the minimum target distance is 15'. I didn't turn to him or respond to him. I ran it out to 15'. I'm now sick of this place for the day but, I need to finish my job. A couple more mags, changed the barrel, two more mags, put the first barrel back on, two more mags. Now I'm done. During this time he's asked me if I'm keeping my brass, I told him just the 45 not the 25. He had swept some 45 brass into my lane after that. Thank you. I get packed up, sweep my area clear of brass and head out.

Now I'm passing through the first bay or lanes and there's two people using one lane. A man and a woman. The man tells the woman to step out of the lane and face him. She's holding a black frame with a red slide, two hands and it's pointing at him. Now I'm thinking WTF is going on here? He uses a tool at the top of the slide to do something. OK....maybe it's a training tool and not a firearm. I get into the lobby and return the stapler and get my ID. I asked the guys behind the counter if dude in the first bay is a trainer. They and some other guy on the customer side of the counter confirm that he is, so I tell them what I saw. I'm informed that it's a SRT and designed to not look like a real gun because of bright colors. OK...I tell them colors don't mean anything to me because I'm a Cerakote applicator, so if you want a red gun, I'm making it red. In my opinion, if you're a trainer, you shouldn't have trainees stepping off the line with a training faux gun and facing perpendicular to the line sweeping the line with a muzzle.

Yeah. That sucks.

Re: trainer

You train as you shoot. So never violate the firearm rules. Regardless of training gun or not. It sets up for failure.

"You might find that it's too sticky." Thanks, man. :ROFLMAO:

Good review. Yeah, some of that stuff is irritating.

Yes, that whole deal rubbed me wrong enough to push me into finally going in for a range membership elsewhere. I should have done that a long time ago.

I would like to find a range that was not run by assholes and populated by dipshits. By now, I’m pretty sure such a thing doesn’t exist

It does exist, but the waiting list for membership is closed now, and it's a bit of a drive for you, but I'll get you in whenever you want. There are a few dipshits there but you probably already know them. icon_eek .

Glad to say I've not shot at a public range in a few years. Fuck all that noise. Gun store and range commandos can be giant idiots at times.

Was this the one in Welchers, or somewhere else?
