The whole inflation thing may be the real key to our undoing. Instead of a working man banking his $20 gold piece and sleeping soundly knowing it will retain its wealth until he retires, he must play the stock market, wheel and deal real estate and other items to stay ahead which is difficult to do. Most importantly our federal government uses it to finance endless wars and encourage profligate spending with the next users of money, e.g. state and local governments and now foreign governments and individuals who tie into our economic system. No one can ever stay ahead. I think this system degrades us morally from many angles.

jackass.....investing is not that hard....the hard thing is finding someone with your good interests at heart so that they can find you investments that are so good that they also invest in them. I am glad that my parents found two such people so that I can just let my investments ride with theirs.

Now for books it is Hard to beat The ABCs of Reloading. Even the copies from the sixties are a good read.

You're not getting my point. People never had to invest before the Federal Reserve Act and especially before FDR took us off the gold standard in 1933. Their money did not evaporate sitting in the bank or in their pocket.

My grandfather got a bonus of $20 (a $20 gold piece) in the Depression which was a big deal back then, $1471 in today's money. If they had kept the gold piece, it would of retained its value nicely. If they put it in the bank, it would have lost most of its worth.

In addition, people were taxed a whole lot less back then and most people in the Depression were not subject to the other gift from President Wilson's era, the Revenue Act of 1916 (income tax) as we are today. Or the myriad of other taxes, near 50% at this point however you are calculating.

Inflation is a beast that will consume us all and no matter how fast you run this bear will eventually catch up and eat you. And taxation is the other.

Has a new series out called "Breaking Gods". Futuristic setting, mankind in in shambles and ruled by a militaristic over-class(es).

There are two major factions that have been fighting for 500 years, but there's a new force that's had enough.

I am reading Roger Stone's books (https://stonecoldtruth.com/shop/) and this is a nice companion to his The Man Who Killed Kennedy. It goes into greater detail on LBJ's life and beginnings and more on his administration.

If Wilson, FDR, and Truman did not do enough damage, LBJ enabled the Deep State and turned on profligate spending as never before. Due to his massive ego who had to ensure his place as the greatest American President, he passed civil rights legislation he held up as Majority Leader for years and even as Vice President as not to give Kennedy credit, got us involved in a hot war to be a wartime President, in addition to allegedly killing his predecessor to get on top. He fed lucrative defense contracts to his Texas buddies (Brown and Root, General Dynamics) and skimmed off the top to add to his considerable wealth. He preceded the Clinton body count by having his own to cover up his misdeeds in getting elected to Senate, eliminating any evidence to his corruption and silencing critics to ensure an unblemished future record as President.

If LBJ were not president, he would be in a mental institution.

Oh, and don't forget the USS Liberty.

I mentioned "The Dog Stars" by Peter Heller in another thread so I thought I'd pop over here and do a review.

No...not the actor who played Robocop (and Buckaroo Banzai...). That's Peter Weller.

The Dog Stars is a "a flu wiped nearly everyone out" scenario. The writer uses the 1st person to really get inside the main character's head, and uses a really engaging style of short sentences (a lot of fragments) and dense language, almost poetic really. His bio says he has a MFA in fiction and poetry so that's pretty understandable.

I won't give away any spoilers about the plot, but it's a very engaging and believable story. A lot of interesting info on small aircraft, fishing, hunting, and the character's motivation for getting up every morning. It's not a kind world. I found it really similar to The Road by Cormac McCarthy (also a movie of course), at least as a setting, though a lot more wildlife has survived in The Dog Stars.

The main character is what I'd call a reluctant gun nut --- he's into them solely to defend himself and hunt --- while there are other characters who are very much gun nuts. One is a "Bert Gummer in 'Tremors'" type with a different piece for every situation. This novel is definitely NOT gun porn and there are a couple inconsistencies in the descriptions. Gunfights are far from heroic and are gritty and realistic.

It's a quick read due to all the white space the author uses, and I recommend it UNLESS you just lost your entire family and you live in a remote cabin with a dog as your only companion. Then it's going to depress the hell out of you.

Recalled reading that after your comments in your other thread. Can confirm: It's a pretty good story. (I'd forgotten about the CHEY-tac.)

Currently on the last book in a series from Puyallup resident Jason Anspach. Book 9 in the Galaxy's Edge series is called "Order of the Centurian" Opps: "Retribution". Pretty fun stuff.

There are some prequels and other serials that are concurrent to the main series too. Like that one mistakenly referenced above. "Order of the Centurian" is a different book from a related series.

Pierce County has produced some fine scifi authors. Some schlub named Frank Herbert grew up there.

*psst* he wrote the best selling scifi novel of all time, Dune.
