10/22 .22 Short/Colibri Magazine Review

Tue Jul 10, 2018 6:40 pm

Recently I got a 10/22 .22 Short Magazine from Urban Rifle Supply in Meridian, ID. It also feeds CBs and the Aguila Super Colibris. I mostly got it for the latter, though I do have some Shorts lying around. They recommend against plain Colibris due to the greater risk of a squib.

$44.00 shipped. Overall I give it an A-. It works GREAT with Super Colibris. With these, the 10/22 is a true straight pull repeater and it's easy to load 10. Feeding has been flawless. The reason it doesn't get an A+ is it's not as simple with Shorts. First, they are hard to load. The subsequent round tends to catch the rim on the mouth of the previous case. This gets tougher as you keep loading. It was very difficult to get the last 2-3 in the mag. And, Shorts have just enough power (in my rifle at least) to partially cycle the action and stovepipe. I have to hold the bolt handle in order to prevent this. Not a big deal with a 4lb superlight Tac-Sol Backpacker, but I imagine much less ergonomic with a steel bull barrel model.

So, if you live in an area where you can shoot actual firearms in your backyard, but are concerned with the noise and range of .22LR, AND own a 10/22, I would check this out.

You can see the pin they added which keeps the round from pushing too far forward, and lets it simply roll right over. Works well.

I love those Super Colibri's....great for backyard plinking. Never had a squib in a rifle, even though those are not recommended for them.
Little 20gr bullet, no powder and a heavy rimfire primer pierced a steel washtun at 25 feet with almost no noise at all.
Hard to find locally anymore though.

Thanks for the review. I didn't know that this product existed.

Maybe you need one of these for the .22 Shorts?

That might be an option for a stock rifle, but there's not a lot of Ruger in the Tac-Sol gun. The ejection port is quite a bit different.

For anyone who wonders why a stovepipe is bad on a straight pull, it's because it often also tries to load the next round. So now you have an expended stovepipe and a partially loaded live round dancing around in your action. PITA.
