The US Army would teach us on decision matrices with weighted criteria to make choices of this sort.

https://templatelab.com/decision-matrix/

Screening Criteria:
location: must be withing nearby towing distance

Criteria:
Initial cost, reliability, longevity

I omitted warranty coverage.

Courses of action:
1. new
2. used
3. rebuilt
4. sell

Finding a good used Duramax is doable. Let me check with a buddy that deals with them for a living. It is a way better idea to keep it going. There is no way it can be replaced for 13k.

Find a insurance salvage auction, you could buy a low mileage complete truck ( totaled of course) for less.
Newer or older motor with everything attached, I’d look for an ‘06 personally
You might even get some cool new add ons to use
Power retracting steps, power mirrors, upgraded seats, custom wheels/ tires, exhaust, stereo, etc, canopy rack, to name a few items
When I had my ‘04 totaled by the the insurance company, I bought it back plus a parts truck to have mine rebuilt,
Turned out better than the original buy far, for less than the settlement

had it towed back from the dealer. just going to put it in the back yard for now and be on the lookout for a used motor
buying from insurance auction is not as easy as it was back in the day, there is a tonn of people out there that are hunting for these LMM motors to do swaps and stuff, so bidding is crazy on them, and, by the time you get done paying all the auction fees it's almost not worth it
