Media Inc Publishing Group seeks a full-time, in-house editor for a glossy monthly consumer magazine and its website and social media outlets.
The position requires knowledge of the American shooting world, great organizational skills, reporting and story-writing abilities, copy-editing know-how and the flexibility to operate under deadline pressure in a dynamic office environment, while also posting daily items to a blog and social media.
Located in Tukwila, Wash., between Seattle and Tacoma, American Shooting Journal strives to cover the human side of the American gun world, while also reviewing new and interesting firearms. Our stories highlight subjects such as today’s vibrant young shooters, female marksmen, gunmakers, competitors in pistol, shotgun, blackpowder and precision disciplines, our brave men and women serving in the nation’s military and law enforcement fields, and everything from the latest cultural icons related to our industry – for instance, Louie Tuminaro of TV’s The Gunfather, and the real-life security contractors portrayed in the movie 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi – to historical figures and their weapons. Additionally, we cover hunting, firearm law, SHOT Show, NRA Annual Meeting & Exhibits, and much, much more.
The editor’s magazine responsibilities include:
* Work with the publisher, sales department and executive editor on each issue’s theme, content and cover;
* Solicit and develop regular contributions from freelancers around the country, each issue gathering anywhere from 10 to 15 feature stories from outside contractors under a tight budget;
* Write several articles, as-needed stories and fill “departments” such as monthly calendars;
* Produce complete, ready-for-layout story packages for the design department, and then shepherd that material through proofreading until it is signed off as press-ready.
* Additionally, create each issue’s Table of Contents, collect potential cover images and write coverlines.
On the social media side, the editor uses the blog Americanshootingjournal.com and the magazine’s Facebook, Twitter, and other accounts to communicate with readers and spread select stories from the magazine and drive and produce new content to a wider audience than is reached on the newsstand, in hopes of creating new magazine readers.
