What do these field of view numbers mean, and how do I compare them?

For the first one, at 5x you can see 5.3 meters across at 100 meters distance. Zoom in to 25x, and you can see 1.5 meters across.

Similarly, the second one ranges from 25.2 inches (unzoomed) to 5.2 inches (zoomed) at 100 yards. (WTF, that's a hell of a zoom -- is that real?)

Gotta do the math to convert one system to the other, if you want to compare. But right off the bat, I can tell you that the first one has waaaaay more field of view. Something doesn't seem right here.

That's 53 centimeters = 20.9 inches and 15 centimeters = 5.9 inches.

I'm doubtful...

Those numbers on the first scope look realistic to me, at 1.5 meters to 5.3 meters. Don't you think?

The second one seems waaaay off. At 5x you can only see 25 inches across at 100 yards? That's nuts.

That's what's confusing me so much. 5" FOV at 100 yards at 25x? lol yeah right.

Their Youtube video about the scope claims it has "extra wide filed of view" at low magnification to help find targets. Maybe should read 25 yards FEET@ 5x magnification and 5.2 inches at high magnification?

That does seem low.
FOV for the Vortex Venom is 4.7 ft at 25x
Magnification 5-25x
Objective Lens Diameter 56 mm
Eye Relief 3.6 inches
Field of View 21.2-4.7 ft @100 yds

So the S&B with 5.3 meter is 17.4feet at 5x?
Vortex is 21feet at 5x?
Kahles is 25feet at 5x?

OK, this made me curious.

S & B
5.3 meters = 17.39 feet
1.5 meters = 4.9 feet

Kahles - Note: All the stores I looked at give these numbers for the Kahles, not the ones listed on the Kahles site:
7.06 meters = 23.16 feet
1.5 meters = 4.89 feet

But that still looked odd. So I called up and sorted list at Opticsplanet of all 5-25x scopes.
Almost all showed 4.9 feet @25x but 5x was... interesting.

NightForce ATACR F1 18.7 feet
Minox ZP5 25.0 feet
S & B 17.4 feet
Tangent Theta 25 feet
US Optics 16 feet
Steiner M5Xi 23.6 feet

Weird.

^ Now we are getting somewhere. I wonder if those original Kahles numbers are supposed to be feet, not inches.

And snozzie, if you're really getting down and dirty, you need to adjust for 100m vs. 100yd too.

But . . . my guess is that the field of view isn't going to be your deciding factor here, as they are all going to be roughly the same.

Da fuk?
One brand I listed above was 16 feet, another was 25 feet.
All for 5x.
Apparently, 5x is not 5x everywhere!

Well, yeah. It also depends on the size of the tube, or whatever factors inside the scope -- I'm not an expert. But you will have differences.

5" can be inches but in context it also means arc seconds- stiil pretty narrow.
