Big Green is trying to develop a high velocity very short barreled MG. Pushing 2900 fps from a 10 inch barrel by using an improved chamber designed to handle high pressures the idea is to achieve full length M4 velocities on very short barrels.

The weapons system goals:

“The goal is to get rifle-like velocities out of a very small weapon that is high capacity, that’s either adaptable for room-clearing or confined spaces,” Zac Wingard, a mechanical engineer at the Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory, told TechLink. “Like you’re getting in and out of vehicles or a subterranean environment, but also applicable for remotely operated systems, so think like perimeter security or ground robot or even a drone.”

Drones... [shudders]

So, a modernized 6.5CBJ which is already a generation ahead of the current 5.56mm/9mm platforms we use. I'm down!

I like what they’re attempting but the increased chamber pressures seem like a recipe for kb’s. Meh, glass half empty over here I guess.

The amount of fire and noise coming out the end should clear a room all by itself.

Metallurgy is the limiting factor here. I think they’re going to have to get away from a brass cartridge. It would be cool if they could figure out how to “print” a projectile and charge in a chamber - very quickly of course.

Although, Liberty Ammunition makes a monolithic 60 grain 10mm round that supposedly moves at 2400fps from a pistol.

Still, a weapon with the ability to create a round based on need would be pretty cool. Imagine being able to switch from a long range anti-materiel round to a sub-sonic anti-personnel round with the flick of lever.

Why not just 300 BLK with 110 gr supers? Not 2900 fps ... But should be 2200 or so.
