I have a 30/40 Krag I'm thinking of parting ways with. I inherited it sometime back. I've never even shot it. I have no idea how to price one and they are all over on GunBroker. I k ow it's a Springfield Armory, unfortunately it had been drilled and tapped for a scope. And it is the full length rifle and it pretty decent condition for its age. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Well, my first thought is that you should give it a chance. The Krag is an amazing rifle. Work that bolt . . . oh, suuuuuper smooth! Open the magazine, and try to understand the f'ing black magic involved in making a cartridge go in the right side, then somehow make its way under and around and in from the left! WOW!

And it's just as fun to shoot. Powerful enough to have some serious stopping power, but light enough that you can comfortably shoot it for a while -- less than a .308 or similar.

It really is a fun rifle, and a fun cartridge. If you have ANY interest in it at all, give it a try!

It sounds like your Krag is unmolested except for the scope drilling. If it were straight-up unmolested and in good condition, I'd be looking at maybe $800 for it, give or take. With the scope drilling, you probably need to knock a couple hundred off of that due to lost collector value . . .? Something like that.

Here is a good video on the history and features of this old dump loader.

It looks like a Weaver #48402 base and #49350 scope mount would fit if you wanted to mount a scope. Probably what was mounted on the rifle after the D&T.

Having a Krag that wasn't cut down and sportorized is as rare as hens teeth. One of my all time favorite actions the only reason it didn't stay longer in service is that they found out that stripper clips were faster to reload, and the 8mm mauser could out distance it.

My first thought was, "what a nerd!" :ROFLMAO:

Then I immediately starting to daydream about stroking the action on my Krag and then fiddling with the workings inside in amazement!

Exquisitely worded, fellow gun nerd! :wagwoot:
