That is absolutely terrifying! icon_eek

Really makes me think twice about running surplus ammo in my 50. He makes a great point that you never know about old military ammo or random milsurp reloads and what may be happening as the powder potentially degrades inside the case.

Sobering. Lucky his dad was there filming!

Ian did a good breakdown of this failure on Forgotten Weapons also. Taken together with the original Kentucky Ballistics vid it's some sobering stuff.

Left me feeling twice as glad that I got rid of all my Turk 8mm.

I’ve got some 1940s German surplus ammo, 8mm I think that I am looking to peddle.

Incredible. I'll say it too, dude is lucky to be alive. Hell of a reminder to not get complacent, or reckless when handling your firearms. Granted, this was a freak accident, but nonetheless a scary reminder.

YMMV Jim, but I've got mountains of pre-war and early-war German. Started out with 7k+, have fired about half of it. Not a hangfire, dud or cracked neck in the bunch. Depending on the lot and manufacturer I consistently get 2-4 MOA out of it, which is all it was ever designed for.

The Turk was a special case and there are a lot of stories about how it got that way but the bottom line was powder degredation that made it hotter and hotter and hotter.

Not to dissuade you from parting with your German 8mm, don't get me wrong. Just sharing my experience with it.

Holy crap!!!!

That is fucking scary.

Im not trying to compare the situation but I had a Hot Round in a M1A and it scared the crap out of me and I feel dam lucky that all I got was a blown magazine and a story to tell.

He's a nice fellow with a good channel but you should NEVER shoot ammo of unknown provinence, and NEVER (for you preppers) use battle field pick up ammo. It's for components only and you had better have suitable powder tucked away. Life is permanent and Fallout is just a video game

Mark Serbu had a reply(built the gun), and again i feel like he is one of the good guys in the industry. Apparently he is going to look at his gun and see if he can determine the issue

Mark Serbu is my spirit animal.

Yeah, basically he's going to try to break his own gun. Meaning, by god, he's going to break it, then figure out how to make it harder to break and/or how to make it break less dangerously.

That was a SLAP round with a load factor known to create higher barrel pressure compared to standard 50 cal. ammo.

Also, he sent the round down a barrel equipped with a muzzle brake - a definite no no for a sabot round.

Barrett insists upon only their military grade barrel being installed on rifles being used for sabot rounds, so there is that as well.

Put it all together, and it has less to do with old ammo, and more to do with proper preparation prior to pulling the trigger.

Do your homework first. Old ammo was not the problem here at all.
