I have been using my S&W MP 22 Compact for training and really like it. Thinking of getting a S&W M2.0 for winter CCW and home defense.
I found a S&W MP9 Compact with the Red Dot sight already included.

At this time of increased prices and the ever changing Micro Compact Optic Ready pistols coming out do you think I should go ahead or wait?

What would you be waiting for? Prices? Different options? A non-optic pistol?

Personally, I would get the optic-ready pistol. If you don't want the optic, take it off, sell it, and put a cover on.

But personally, I like pistol optics. I'd have a red dot on every handgun if I could afford it, and if I could find somebody willing to mill my USP's. Red dots on handguns are the future. Some just haven't realized it yet.

Red dots on pistols is the new future.

I have transitioned to putting red dots on all my guns over the last few years. Ain’t cheap but well worth it to me.

Aging eyesight is my biggest reason for me. But the advantages are pretty clear.

I like red dots for new shooters. It does take some getting used to by experienced shooters.

I think my worry is I will buy it and 3 months from now S&W comes out with the tactical version that includes the threaded barrel or one with a safety (I like them on striker guns) or lower price or another company creates a better/cheaper option.
Pricing out the costs the one with the included optic is only $80 more than the regular non-safety optic ready version.

That new Trijicon RMRcc is looking pretty cool. The idea of a little carry gun with one of those, like a G43/48, kinda has me wanting one.

Me too. A G48 with a small optic and a rail would be tits galore.

More companies are coming out with red dot packages... but not all will include everything one would want.

Or at least optic ready versions. The problem is that one may want a different optic on that firearm than what comes standard and already mounted.

But it is the future - now. Battery life and reliability are good enough for most for civilian uses.

I'm trending more and more to red dots. Currently have a FN509 Tactical with RMR06. Just picked up a RMR07 to go on a Glock 45 MOS I've had for a while. Both of those guns I went with red dots for sighting over suppressors but the red dot has other advantages as well including quick target acquisition, particularly with the larger dot sizes.

My carry guns are a Smith 642 (no optic option there) and an older Sig P365. I think the new P365 or Hellcat with optics option would make a great carry gun. Pop in one of the (slightly) extended magazines and you have a gun with decent capacity suitable for either summer (hello Hawaiian shirt) or winter carry.

Red dot on my G19/5 works great for my astigmatism.
But... M&P? Eek!

Something worth considering is whether or not the platforms you’re interested are being redesigned or can be modified to accept the optic your want at a height that you can accept. GLOCK MOS systems seat the optic too high for my taste and dovetail mounted optics are even worse. However, some platforms can be machined to accept an optic seated lower into the slide than what the mfg offers. There’s also the Walther PDP line that was designed around red dots, accepts Glock style sights and doesn’t require that you use tall sights for when the optic fails.

I will add to above. It’s a good point.

So background Sig vs Glock type guns.
Sig typically sit higher on the hand (meaning the barrel is above the webbing of your hand). Glocks tend to be right at the webbing of your hand. So this factors to iron sight height and also the tendency to relearn the axis of your shooting sight picture for folks newer to red dots.

“Finding” the red dot in space relative to your typical grip/sight picture does take some relearning. It definitely feels different when you start but as with anything... learning takes practice and getting used to it.

Then depending on the design of the Gun may or may not allow for certain features... like enough spacing for iron sights and red dot. Some won’t have enough and so will have a mount designed with iron sights in front or behind a red dot. Some will forego the sight all together. Just depends on the gun and size of the red dot.

Good news is that more and more red dots are on the market and they are getting smaller and cheaper (relative costs).
