What do you use for hearing protection? How much is enough?
Are ear plugs not enough? Are ear muffs not enough? Do you wear plugs + ear muffs? Is 26db of protection good enough for rimfire? How about for centerfire? Is 30db enough for centerfire?
Do you own a set of custom fit digital ear plugs? I'm curious about these. Thinking about getting a set.

I wear plugs every day at work in the machine shop. In the indoor range I wear plugs+muffs rated for 26db. At the outdoor range I normally wear plugs only, unless there’s a genius next to me with muzzle brake on his Gucci “platform”. Then, I have to wear plugs and muffs. I wish suppressors were sold over the counter!

Looking to replace the 30db muffs, wondering if I actually need to or if 26db muffs are enough. Also wondering if I should buy a box of plugs too and double up.

MSA Sordins. Comfortable for long shooting sessions, small enough to fit most rifle stocks.
If I'm shooting something extra loud indoors I'll double up with disposable foam plugs.

If indoors, plugs + muffs. If outdoors, just muffs.
I have funny-shaped ear canals, so plugs by themselves don't do much unless I shove them into my cranial cavity, which doesn't feel good, so I don't do it.
Having a quality pair of muffs is key.

I use molded earbuds from Decibullz. My wife and I both love these as they are lightweight, effective, and not bulky.

Modern technology has advanced so much especially to hearing protection.
Keep it cheap and simple - ear plugs.
Factors to consider - what, where and how much
What are you shooting? What caliber? What firearm? Where are you shooting? Indoors or outdoors? What kind of sound absorption if any? How much shooting are you exposing yourself? How much is your budget? Literally can spend $100-$600 or more on a setup.
If you shoot precision rifle or shotgun ear muff design becomes a form factor depending on the design and shooting position.
Even the season - winter ear muffs keeps your ears warm. In the summer it becomes sweaty and way too hot.
Electronic ear muffs or now electronic ear plugs are the new technology.
It’s one thing to block out the sound but to enhance verbal voice level or more is the way to go. It’s all about long term saving your hearing.

I usually just wear my good old army issue triple flange plugs. I do have a set of the electronic muffs that I occasional wear but only when it's cold out.

Plugs and electronic muffs. Don’t want my hearing to go too.
Foam plugs and Walker Razor (recently since the Howard Leight sportster crapped out after 5 years)

I'm super pissed the republicans didn't pass the hearing protection action when they had the house/senate/presidency. Fucking useless bastards. Mr. Q wrote: I use molded earbuds from Decibullz. Does anybody own some? In the winter now it would be nice to put them in, and then put a stocking cap on to keep my head warm.

How easy were they to configure and get right? They were kind of easy to get set up. It was a set up and forget about it. I love these man, we shot a lot in the cold the last few years and these have been worth the purchase over and over again. As a matter of fact, I need to get another couple pairs to just throw into different setups. There isn’t an electronic earbud that’s met my requirements that I’ve seen yet, but once technology catches up, I’ll be on it. There is something from ultimate ears that’s got my attention, it’s a light activated mold. But I’m not sure it’ll work effectively for shooting. -e
