I see that OP is in Montana, but for any WA readers note that the pending WA bill 5217 will ban all AR-15s and AK’s in “all forms” not only semiautomatic.

This bill says it was introduced last year (2021). Has a new one been filed for this year (2022)?
Yes, see the 2A section and the easy to do today thread.
The bills are already in motion. Register a no vote b4 Monday's hearing

You can never be too prepared. Consider the ant thou sluggard.

Need Long term Food or Survival Supplies, I have extras, Grab the Supplies_Available.pdf. Prices Quoted are close to my actual cost:

The prudent Wagunner trains and prepares to defend themselves and their families, friends, and neighbors. They also are prepared to feed, shelter, and provide aid as well.
Danger is coming and may already be here, how prepared are you? Click the link above for lots of good info to get started.

Or is this purely an exercise in how you can have an AR-15 type rifle that doesn't function like an AR-15?

Much more this. If a shop could simply remove a gas tube, life would be so much easier for us peons trying to exercise our rights.

Well, if you're just trying to avoid the SAR issue, then buy the upper and lower separately. No games, you're good to go.

This would be true, except a lower is not considered a long gun, and since I now live more than 50% of the time in MT, I can only buy a long gun in WA- except now SARs are illegal to sell to out of state residents because they are somehow not a long gun anymore... my good friend and FFL dealer in WA gets crazy good deals sometimes, and I'm apparently SOL unless I want to pay shipping/transfer twice...
