Silencers technology is always improving, kinda like your iphones. Of course, there are quite a few good ones that stand the test of time. Do lots of research, and if possible, go test drive one if possible from friends or a friendly range.

Griffin's pistol cans are...less popular.

I have several of their rifle taper mount devices, but for a pistol can, you will find a lot of people suggesting things like the Rugged Obsidian 45, Dead Air Ghost-m, Silencerco Omega 9K, etc.

I love both the Obsidian 45 and Ghost. I do not suggest the Obsidian 9. Omega 9K is very commonly suggested.

22 suppressor first unless you never shoot rimfire. If not then 9mm pistol can, then add a rifle can as soon as possible. If you shoot 6.5 CM and 5.56, wisdom suggests to get a 30 cal rifle can that you can use on both, and any other rifle (up to 30 cal) that you may get in the future.
When I see 5.56 and 6.5 CM, that tells me someone has different uses for each caliber, unless they are hunting coyotes with that 5.56

To me, that’s two different cans, for two different applications. The 6.5 CM to me is most likely a hunting rig and should be with its own class of silencers. The 5.56 to me is either a range toy, a home defense tool, or a weekend training tool. That’s a different class of silencer from a hunting can.

Maybe. Maybe not. That's a lot of assumptions you're making there.

And the "6.5 CM to me is most likely a hunting rig" is pure comedy.

Contrary to popular misconception, it IS possible to have a difference of opinion without being a dick about it.

Why no love on the obsidian 9?

on pistols that have a slide that moves backward and forward when cycled, a barrel typically gets angled up when the slide is back, then levels out when the slide moves forward. This movement where the barrel 'wags' up and down creates the need for a spring isolator, or "Neilson" device at the back of suppressor. A 'suppressor piston' is the part that screws onto the threaded barrel, and presses on a spring, inside of the "Nielson" device.

it looks like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVXJcf3xL_c

pistol suppressor pistons are thread-specific. From 22LR to 9mm are typically 1/2x28 standard. Sometimes you see metric on some guns. M13.5x1 as an example. 40-45ACP often use a 5/8x24 thread or M16x1.0LH.

Mmm. Clarification on this.

A booster is necessary because browning locked breech pistols are recoil activated, where the barrel and slide recoil backwards together a small amount until the barrel unlocks and stops while the slide keeps going. Hanging a big mass (the suppressor) on the barrel means the whole assembly moves less, and not enough to get the slide cycling. A booster, mounted between the barrel and suppressor, uses some of the gas pressure to kick the slide/barrel assy back, reacting the suppressor mass in the other direction. This is why something like a 9mm Glock with a suppressor seems to have more felt recoil than just the Glock alone with the same load; the booster is kicking the slide and barrel back harder than it normally would.

The booster does not simply "disconnect" the barrel from the suppressor, and the tilting of the barrel has nothing to do with the need for the booster (the booster does nothing to allow the barrel to tilt, it's motion is purely in/out in line with the barrel). It's all about that recoil operation and generating the recoil needed for it to work.

It comes with a booster, but what is the "piston". I'm a newbie for pistol suppressors.

A booster is just a spring and a piston. The piston is what screws onto the threaded barrel of your pistol, so you would have one spring and then get whatever pistons needed to cover the thread pitches on your threaded barrels. There are a lot of YouTube videos that go into detail on all that. Mrgunsngear and iraqveteran8888 normally have good intro videos to suppressors.

One thing if you haven't shot suppressors much that surprised me when I got started, is that with the exception of using subsonic ammo and 22LR, suppressed guns are mostly still really freaking loud. I've shot my 11.5" and 18" 556 ARs only one shot each with a can on without hearing protection and never did that again. Same thing with supersonic ammo through a 9MM pistol. It is quieter for sure, but still loud and can hurt your hearing. So in most cases you still want to wear hearing protection. For me the upside is I don't double up hearing protection when shooting rifles if I am shooting them suppressed.

I don't think there is anything wrong with starting out with a multipurpose suppressor. Long term you will probably want more, but starting with a multi purpose one can help you better decide if you want/need other dedicated cans and what they are. Particularly if you get something that isn't really long, or heavy, or get one that has the ability to be setup in a short config. Ideally your first can should be the one you think you would use the most. Taking into account the possible need to buy threaded barrels, new sights, muzzle devices and etc. for each gun, which can really add up. The calibers you listed would all be supported by the Silencerco Omega 36M, which supports many mounting options, including Dead Air, pistol boosters, etc. Having something with pretty versatile mounting options like Dead Air or Silencerco compatibility means that you can mix and match many different suppressor brands and not have to buy all new muzzle devices if you get a different suppressor.

I got a 22LR can first, which overall I use the most because it is the most affordable to shoot, then got a 30 cal rifle can for 556 and to be able to go up to 30 cal if I want, which I use the least. I pretty much only use it on my 556 sbr, so in hindsight I wish I had gotten something shorter. The last thing I got was an Obsidian 45 cause I wanted a FNX 45, but at the time only had 9mm pistols to suppress. Now I use that one quite a bit because I have a few pistols I can use it on and several 9mm PCCs with three lugs. If you keep a strap wrench and one of those suppressor multi tools in your range bag it isn't a big deal to swap between different mount setups during a range visit. My next purchase will probably be a 9mm can specifically for 3lug usage.

To Throw a little more info out there....
A lot of companies are doing a 1.375" thread size, so a lot of mounts can share between suppressors using the same size mount. So you can add versatility to your suppressors that way as well.

I have a 7.62 for my .308 and below rifle.
A .22LR for my .22LR rifles and pistols.
And I will buy a .45 ACP for my 9mm and .45ACP pistols. So three total for all my guns from .22LR to .308/7.62.

Think this is route I'll go.

Come see me if you'd like to see, hold, and buy what this actually looks and feels like on multiple platforms.
