Been thinking I need to add a dedicated Scout rifle to the collection. What does everyone like? I'm thinking along Jeff Coopers guidelines. The Ruger has caught my eye, but has proprietary mags. Any other short, mag fed, bolt action rifles out there I an missing? I know the Mossberg exists, but am ignorant to its quality. Any and all help appreciated!

Why not a lever gun?

savage 110? model 11?

That Ruger scout should be fine, proprietary mags not withstanding?

Seems the Savage 11 Scout is the truly dedicated Scout model they make from the factory. It has proprietary Savage mags. The Duger and Christiansen have AICS compatibility, which is a plus for me. However, it seems like someone would have made a rifle either AR or M1A mag compatible by now. Looks like I won't be that lucky and will have to settle for AICS of some flavor.

I think the mossberg mvp series is hugely underrated. Both of my prairie dog rifles are mossbergs and their accuracy and dependability has been exceptional. Not the mention the price point is lower than most brands and they are AR (10/15) mag compatible.

I’d take a serious look at the mvp scout if I was in that market. And of course, you’re welcome to come down to MRC and try out my rifles if you’d like.

My dad has had two of the Mossberg MVP rifles in 223/556. They both were accurate right out of the box.
The one down side to them. Is the small barrel diameter. After a few shots the group would open up due to the barrel getting hot.
If you decide to get a Mossberg be sure to actually put your hands on the model you intend to buy. So you can physically see what you are buying

Like the fact the Mossberg uses M1A mags. Not that I can't buy another mag, but its sure convenient the more weapon systems that share mags the better in my mind. Definitely looking for a 7.62x51 Scout.

The bolt in the Ruger Scout is based on m77 which is a mouser-like design similar to what a winchester 70 has.
If you don't know why is this a positive I can help you out with my totally biased opinion: its the best feeling bolt I have ever seen/try/use/own.

I have it with a forward mounted scope leupold 2x fixy and I get great groups.

+1. It's the only true Jeff Cooper design in production.

You are excused from posting a lever action, when OP is clearly looking for a bolt gun, because that BLR looks so nice.

That thing is sexy as hell. Seen you post it many times over the years. Nothing against it, but yes, definitely thinking a bolt gun is the requirement. I have a Springfield M1A Scout, but in my mind that doesn't meet the requirements set forth, either. Thanks though.
