May I ask if bolt action is chosen over lever, because the ergonomics, or stronger/tight/secure locking design, or both? I am asking, because BLR is not a traditional lever rifle: BLR's bolt featured a rack-and-pinion system and multi-lug rotating bolt. And it's really hard to beat the advantage of packable Takedown version.

Sorry, I didn't want to hijack the OP, just had a suggestion. Next time, I might PM instead.

I'll toss out the cz527 class of rifles which could be had in a variety of cartridges including 7.62x39, 223, and 6.5 gendel.

Kyle, I just picked up a Ruger gunsite scout. who is saying proprietary mags? I got AICS short action p-mags and they work great. Love the fricken gun. paired with a Vortex Crossfire II scout KeystoneCowboy wrote: Been thinking I need to add a dedicated Scout rifle to the collection. What does everyone like? I'm thinking along Jeff Coopers guidelines. The Ruger has caught my eye, but has proprietary mags. Any other short, mag fed, bolt action rifles out there I an missing? I know the Mossberg exists, but am ignorant to its quality. Any and all help appreciated!

Still not as comman as say M1A mags, but they are available at least.

Savage will also make you a custom piece if there are some things you’d liked they don’t offer already.

Seems its pretty hard to find the PERFECT Scout rifle. Some fratures I like on some, and some kn others. Naturally. Not sure how well its known, but I'm quite the Tikka/Sako fanboy. While not a perfect fit of Cooper's requirements, this one is close. Mags are the main issue for me here as well though. https://www.tikka.fi/rifles/tikka-t3x/t3x-arctic
