Flashfire visit to John M Browning Museum in Ogden, UT (March 2013) John Moses Browning (January 23, 1855[1] – November 26, 1926), born in Ogden, Utah, was an American firearms designer who developed many varieties of military and civilian firearms, cartridges, and gun mechanisms, many of which are still in use around the world. He is arguably the most important figure in the design and development of modern automatic and semi-automatic firearms and is credited with 128 gun patents. He made his first firearm at age 13 in his father's gun shop, and was awarded his first patent on October 7, 1879 at the age of 24. From the age of 29 to 45 he averaged being awarded a firearm patent every three months for the innovative designs he created. John M Browning Museum is located in Ogden Utah on the 2nd Floor of Union Station, a historical landmark in the city. The Museum Hours are 10AM - 5PM and tickets cost $5.00 for adults. Here I am at the door ready to go in. My father is viewing one of the preview exhibits, located near the entrance to the museum. Wall display providing an overiew of John M Browning, and his son Val Browning. A set of display cases of minitiature firearm model that provide an overview of the development of firearms Note: the minitiature models of the 30 Caliber Machine Gun and the 50 Caliber Machine Guns are full working models that fire 22LR cartridges! Note: the minitiature model of the gatling gun is a full working model that fires 22 shorts! A historical view of what a portion of the John M Browning gunsmith shop would have looked like and where the genius worked his magic. The tools and parts on the benches are historically accurate. A wide angle view of many of the display cases as you come through the entrance Johnathan Browning was John Moses' father. He was a blacksmith as well as a gunsmith. The museum had a few examples of the Johanthan's work and some of the innovations he came up with. Here you see a black powder multishot magazine (Harmonica rifle) on the top with hammer trigger on the bottom. A revolver rifle (middle). Below are selected highlights of various display cases. You should be able to read the display placards for most of these. Evolution of the M1911 pistol: You will note this display actually shows the original model invented by John M. Browning! |
