T-35 experimental Garand, 1951, Springfield Armory. Looks like elements of Krag-Jorgenson and Johnson rifle design. The impetus was the need to come up with a way to convert Garands to a smaller cartridge. As it turned out, the only change needed was a new barrel. The Italians took it a step further and developed a magazine fed Garand in 7.62x51 called BM59, using a proprietary magazine. Shuff's Parkerizing will convert your Garand to take M14 magazines.

Now that I think for a bit, give Tom Ryder at SPR Industries a call. He is somewhere just north of Seattle. While I am not aware of work he had done on Garands, I have little doubt he is most capable.

I would like to see future manufacture of Garands, personal preference is for clip feed as opposed to detachable magazines due to speed of reloading,

Suggest you contact Tim Shufflin at Shuff's Parkerizing. I am sure he can address your issues. He is probably the best there is in the current market with restoring and modifying Garands. Makes a model he calls the BM 14 that has deliberate similarities to the BM59. Biggest obvious difference is he modifies to accept M-14 mags. You might find this interesting: http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=192152Shuff's Parkerizing: http://shuffsparkerizing.com/bm59-program/

Apparently, that gun was sold through the CMP and it's out there somewhere...

Looks like a Russian .57 (12.5mm). Have not seen one of these in 50 years.

Dear CMP Family,
The CMP advises to not use .30/06 ammunition in M1 Garands, 1903s, and 1903A3s that is loaded beyond 50,000 CUP and has a bullet weight more than 172-174gr. These rifles are at least 70 years old and were not designed for max loads and super heavy bullets. Always wear hearing and eye protection when firing an M1 Garand, 1903 and/or 1903A3 rifle.
This warning is an update/addition to the Ammunition section in the Read This First manual enclosed with each rifle shipment (M1 Garand manual-page 6 and M1903 manual-page 10).
