JBLM Range 15

I went to the website and found this:
"Who may use the range? All military issued ID card holders and sponsored
non-military guest may use the facilities (NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC)(also guests are $5)”.
Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. 10 am–3:30 pm. (CLOSED FRIDAY).

To all those authorized to use the range, if you know what day you were going and wouldn't mind having 'civilian' guests tag along, maybe start a "I'm going to Range 15" thread?

Just a thought.

Unfortunately I think that the web information has not been updated in quite some time.

Prices and hours have changed quite a bit and has been many years since it has been $5.

I frequent range 15 quite a bit and two weeks ago the operating hours were FRI, SAT and SUN 1000-1600.

Fees are at $10 for active duty and retirees. I do not recall what DOD Civilians and guest pay..I seem to recall it was approximately $12.00 or so.

As with anything involving the military there are rules to follow, but find the overhead cover, shooting bench, range safety officer and 350 meter steel targets a welcome bonus for my range time.

I will try to provide more accurate information after my next visit.

I go to Evergreen Sportsman Club by Capitol Forest.

It's been a while since I shot on base, but I've never had to register squat. Something change?

Drove by range 15 for years, and never once went there. Limited hours. Also, if you have any military experience, the last thing you'll seek is going to a military run range, registering your guns on base, and dealing with MPs if God forbid there's any incidents. And oh, should mention, you'd be dealing with federal laws as well. Whole layer of complexity.

No thanks. Not even if the range was free.

Far prefer to just pay a membership at Paul Bunyan, or go elsewhere.

Around 2003 when General Soriano took command of I Corps and Ft Lewis, my Bn Commander said that ALL weapons going to Range 15 had to be registered with the Provost Marshal. This was a new change. So I registered a bunch and carried the permission slip with me when I went and unless you go a lot, it is just a hassle. That's when I remembered it changed.

So, some history for those interested...

So depending on who you are talking too and when they went to Range 15 on Fort Lewis (now JBLM)...

20+ years ago...
Range 15 was on the secured side of the base (Ft Lewis) and one had to go through the secure entrances on East Gate or the Main Gate... which really made it tough unless you were "service related" - aka had a military ID card

10-15 years ago or more...
Range 15 is still on base but not on the secured part. Meaning you didn't have to go through a check point. They closed the East Gate check point and moved it back past Range 15. Meaning if you accessed Range 15 from the old East Gate...

5-10 years...?
There was heightened security and the Base commander made it so that every soldier had to register firearms that came onto the post (aka base)... this included Range 15. Range 15 also enforced that all shooters had to be sponsored. So it basically was closed to the "public"

Now... as you can read. It is not open to the public unless you are sponsored and all firearms are "pre" registered with the Provost Marshall. So even with a military ID you needed to jump more hoops.

We have actually had a few WaGuns Shoots out there some 5-6 years ago before things really changed.


A couple of things to remember. Just because it's not on the "secured" part of base... it is still a Federal Military Installation. Meaning your CPL does not apply. All state laws don't apply. You are on Federal Property and a Military Base to boot. So if you are stopped by military police... the can search you at any given point on base (secured or not) and they do stop folks for going a bit too fast (even a few miles over is enough reason). So don't speed on post.


I've hunted 20-30 years ago on base. I was registered and registered firearms for hunting. I've never registered my other firearms (didn't need to back then) for shooting on Range 15. I was in the Army Reserves so I have used Range 15 a lot back. But since all these changes and I'm not in the Reserves anymore... I have stopped using Range 15.

It's a nice range. 300 meters with stands available at 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300. Nice covered with benches and you could shoot bench, standing, sitting, prone. If you have ever looked at the range. The backstop is some 3+ miles of nothing before turning into McChord.

It was always a requirement but it wasn't enforced.
