I have tried this two times... Extremely slow, lots of lagging. I wish them luck, but they'll need to upgrade their system a lot to capture much traffic.

I think this will be the same with any start up competitor. Folks'll have to have some patience until numbers generate enough revenue to upgrade systems. Kind of a catch 22 EDIT: BTW I just went there and viewed a few with no problems. Thanks for the link to that place. I hope it blossoms.

I wish them huge success. I would suspect my own connection, but I checked other sites including YouTube.

You could always try hooktube.com for now. They still use YouTube videos, but deny ad revenue and views to the actual YouTube. Same videos, just no $$ for google. Also let’s you bypass the age or country restriction crap.

On the weekend I tried my hand at re-creating youtube on my own, basic proof of concept.
1. accept upload 2. transcode 3. host 4. view
Got it done, however... it's expensive, specifically the transcoding.
So for every minute of output transcoded, it costs 1.8 cents. And you need about 4 transcodes (3 resolutions HD, 720, 480p and a thumbnail generation pass). So for a 10 minute video, you are looking at 72 cents in JUST transcoding costs.
Ultimately, hosting is a relatively small price compared to the upfront cost of people uploading stuff that rarely gets watched.

“What’s going on?” Marvin Gaye
I haven’t yet to be hindered by YouTube for any search I’ve made regarding guns. What am I missing and what are “they” trying to distract us from?

They demonetized all gun channels last year, citing that it's "not advertiser friendly". This always seemed like thinly veiled stifling, and recently that confirmed as such by releasing content guidelines specifically against certain types of gun videos, especially making of firearms and ammo as well as linking to to retailers that sell guns.
