 Carry .45: XD Mod2 or M&P Shield 2.0???

So I'd like to start carrying a .45 in addition to my 9mm Shield 2.0 and Sig 320 in 9.

I've got a 5" M&P 2.0 and the Shield and really like them both, but have no experience with Springfield. From all the reviews I've read, the XD scores at the top of value and use.

Hoping folks who have had experience with both might tell me their preference. I'll be trying to find one to shoot at a local range, but if I can't I'm hoping people here might help. (And if you don't have experience with both, perhaps what you like and don't like about both guns.)

Thanks in advance.

I've got the 3.3" model, I like it! I prefer the xd/xdm line over the s&w lines myself. I like the ergonomics better than the competing product lines.

I carry a glock 30s and that feels about the limit of a comfortable carry. I’d vote for the shield in 45 only due to sheer size. 5” is a lot of gun to carry comfortably.

MRQ touched on an important point. You are comparing guns with varied sizes. P320, M&P5.0" and the XD are all big double stack pistols, the Shield is a subcompact single stack. So are you looking for a IWB conceal carry, or just a big 45 to maybe carry OWB?

If you are looking to carry IWB staying with a subcompact SS will be more comfortable which means you need to look at the XDS for a apples to apples comparison. for carry and shootability. .45 in this format can be a bit lacking due to small size, light weight and heavy recoil. That said if you have large hands you may like the XDS better as the more square grip and exchangable backstraps can fit your hand better. I owned a 9mm shield for a long time and switched to XDS as I just shot the XDS better due to grip.

If you are looking new full size then maybe consider the M&P 2.0 or the latest XD model to compare. THe M&P ergos seem very good on the new 2.0's when I held them. Much better stipling than original m&P that really locks into your hand.

I carried an XDS .45 for a while, and with talon or PRP grips, the recoil was very manageable. I was not a fan of the 5+1 however.

the mod2 is a doublestack, so 9 or 13 rounds depending on extensions

You may have missed the post above mine that mentioned the XDS. I know the difference between double and single stack, thanks.

Mod 2 subcompact. Conceals well with a good holster. I liked the Shield and both are comfortable to handle, just wanted more capacity.

Personally out of the choices you listed I would choose the Mod 2 over the Shield in 45. Tho I like 45 I am not a huge fan in such a small frame pistol like the shield but. Use your 9mm shield for those times, and get the mod 2 for those other times. It's good to have different pistols for different situations, atleast that's my personal opinion. Some days I carry my Glock 43/PX4 subcompact, some days my P229, while other days my P226/17/20. Just my opinion, yours/others may vary.

Carry both a .45 M&P and a .45 Shield (M&P in a Miami Classic shoulder rig, Shield in a OWB Masters).
Shield is a lot smaller, M&P is big for only holding 2 more rounds.
The grip on the shield is like 40 grit sandpaper.
Tore up a couple shirts.

Apex trigger on the M&P breaks like glass, really pleased with that.

Don't own an XD.

Ah, I forgot about that shield grip. Yes, it scratched my leather in my car too as I was getting in once. That pissed me off.
It’s been so long since I’ve carried my shield since I’ve switched to the glock 30s.

I prefer Glock over either.

However, the XD in my view is such a great pistol with incredible value. The best loaded chamber and cocked indicators in the market, the 1911 grip safety is awesome (some don't like it claiming a point of failure - fair enough - you can disable it with some gun smithing), and the design, ergos, grip and trigger are fantastic. The XD is a great gun. If I stopped regularly carrying the Glock, and were looking at a replacement, the XD would probably be my striker fired choice.

I have one M&P compact and I've never been much of a M&P fan but cannot articulate why really. They are fine guns, quite popular and affordable. I don't prefer their hinged trigger (although I do have an FNS with a hinged trigger that is great) or sleek feel/grip. YMMV. I guess I don't have much experience with them, since the other guns are so fantastic.
