My FIL says it was his grandfathers at one point. Any idea on model, caliber (not marked anywhere on the gun), etc. ? It's hard to do a serial number lookup from what I can find without a model number to start with. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Tapatalk

I'll ask the obvious. Did you break it open and take out the cylinder? Anything on the bottom of the grip? Might as well take off the grips and look around.
More than likely a .32 - my guess.

Bottom of the grip is the s/n. Didn't take off the grips. Only markings were the patent info on the top rib.
Broke it open but didn't see anything there. Didn't take the cylinder out either but it did have "ejector" like functionality when opening it.

Seems like zombie66 and I are the resident S&W wheelgun nerds here. I'm a little weak on the old top breaks (no pun intended).
EDIT: Slow poster, looks like TINCANBANDIT is a nerd too!
Looks like a 4th Model that's been polished and nickeled. If original you'd be able to read the caliber on the left side (the side showing in the pic). Don't believe S&W ever nickeled the hammers or triggers, dead giveaway. Serial number would help, actually.
Try and slide either a .38 Special or 9mm in the chamber. Of course they're not supposed to go there, it's just for caliber checking. If they slide in, it's a .38 S&W (not Special). If they don't, it's a .32 S&W, and no idea if it's the older Short or newer Long variety. Try a Long and if it doesn't fit, there's your answer. .32ACP will fit in a Long chamber, but is about a 50% overpressure round, probably a bad idea...

Guess it was a 3rd Model after all. Like I mentioned above, I doubt it was factory nickel, or if it was, it was polished off and re-nickeled. Not a big deal really, but might explain the lack of barrel markings. If you want a tidal wave of info on the gun, post it on http://smith-wessonforum.com/ under Antiques.
