Do we really need months waiting and a stamp to own an SBR?

BTW your guns are already "registered".Not if you are an old fart like me and have some that were acquired pre-GCA 1968. Ditto for private purchases pre-I 594. Oh, these firearms may be registered to someone but are they still alive? How many hands have the firearms changed hands since they entered the Federal database without any updates?

I have two AR pistols now. One was going to become a SBR. Then I got a Tavor. the 18 inche, with a longer than stock flash hider is only a few inches longer than a 10.5 barrel AR with stock fully collapsed and shorter than the same SBR when the stock is extended. Once I find an actual IDF buttplate, since the 18 doesn't need that extra inch to make 26", it will lose about .75in. I could also lose about .75 by replacing the Phantom flash hider with the original. That sort of killed by motivation to drop $200 and the silly wait. Plus the having to fill out the form if I ever decided to take it out of state. Kind of a, "why bother," kind of thing.

I personally have both. AR-Pistol (courtesy Techno -Weenie, thanks Brother) and a SBR. Each fill a different role so to speak and offer flexibility. With the new braces coming out, these are coming closer and closer to give SBR performance. I worry less about the ATF than State and local juristictions. Certain states are hurting the 2ND more that the ATF.

Not a single serial number anywhere on my pistol. All parts purchased legally from a 2nd party....so no.
