Here's a real Gem, a Finnish M24 infantry rifle. These were the first variations of Finnish improved Mosin Nagants. Very uncommon "through" bolt at the front band, with the Civil Guard district stamped in the Butt.

These are all beautiful! I love old military guns, the history involved fascinates me.
What resources do you guys use to find out the individual history of these types of rifles?

I use usrifle. :D

You can learn a lot from the stamped markings on the guns and other clues, combined with the huge amount of knowledge (some actually true...) on the internet. At sites like WGO, we have a little sprinkling of all types, but there are serious collector sites out there for each of these types of guns. When you get 1,000 usrifle-types on one site, and they start swapping knowledge and photos, THEN you've got a serious information resource.

Maybe usrifle can add more.

Okay, here's a K98k Mauser, dated 1940. This is a "Russian capture" rifle, meaning that it ended up in Russian hands and was refurbished before being sent off to God-knows-where. You can tell this by a few things:

- The little "X" above the serial number on the left side of the receiver.
- The electropenciled serial number on the bolt.
- The fact that there is a serial number on the stock.
- Capture screws are missing on the trigger guard assembly.
- On many rifles, the fact that the front sight hood has been removed.

It is my understanding (somebody please correct me if they think I'm wrong) that early rifles like this did NOT originally have front sight hoods, so in that regard this rifle is correct as-is.

The caliber is 8mm Mauser.

Is the front site base "grooved" for the hood? If it is, then it was made to accept one. Seeings as it's a 1940 date, Germany was still producing excellent equipment and that would have been issued with all acoutrements including hood.
A nice rifle, 8mm is fun to shoot. I like "pounding" Steel with 'em, it's very satisfying. :)

Errr . . . I don't think it's grooved, but honestly I don't know what grooved looks like. Here it is:

What's the verdict?

That is a Beauty of a Mk III Steve! Great shooters too, though the front site is very fine.
Nope, no "Groove" in that front site base so it did not come with a hood.
Well that surprises me, it would appear that the barrel is original too. Though the front site may have been changed at some point.
Interesting, i'll post a few more rifles later.
Great pics Steve!

Wow . . . I'm on hotel wireless at the moment, and this thread is a KILLER to load! I hope none of you folks are still on dial-up! :((

Moving right along, here's a Model 1891 Argentine Mauser, chambered in 7.65 Argentine (aka 7.65x53, aka 7.65x54). This rifle was made in 1890-something; the crest has been scrubbed, but it is otherwise in remarkably nice condition. It's an easy rifle to shoot, without a lot of recoil.

Here's an uncommon "Elm" stocked Swedish Mauser. Swedish Mausers commonly have French Walnut or Beech replacement stocks. Due to wood shortages in the 1915-1917 period, Elm, Maple and even (Very Rare) Mahogany were used.
These rifles are a joy to shoot, very accurate and excellent ballistics in 6.5x55.

Okay, I'll play. It's raining today, so here's a few indoor pics of a 1916 Swedish Mauser m/94-14 carbine. It's all-matching and has a rather scarce Elm stock. While it does have a muzzle extension required for import after 1968, I find no import marks anywhere; go figure. It is in pristine condition and has been a "safe queen" ever since I bought it with the bayonet 10 years ago. Note the tilted crown on the nose piece. This indicates that it was replaced at some time in the Husqvarna factory, but it was stamped to match the receiver serial number. However, there are no cartouches on the wrist indicating rework.

Gorgeous! I've never found a 94/14 that wasn't "bubba'd" in some way.
Really nice and desirable rifle. I guess i will have to post the maple M96 next. :)

Here's a few more samples from my Swedish Mauser harem. From top to bottom, there's:
1) a 1913 m/96 Target rifle with Elit diopter sights and an original target grip.
2) a rather scarce 1924 m/96. Only 2149 are known to have been made during 1924. Hey, I just noticed that 1924 and 2149 use the same digits; how ironic.
3) a 1942 m/38 with a forged down bolt made by the Husqvarna factory.
4) a 1919 m/38b. This was a m/96 or m/96b at one time; the barrel was shortened to make a m/38b.
