I would if I could! So many toys out here, so many suppressor’s! Hell, talked with a joe today with the new Sig M17. In typical Army fashion he was issued the pistol but has yet to actually fire it...

Thanks guys.
It doesn't work unless you start with good wood.

Bought this 94AE Trapper just for the grain on the forend. By the time I finished with it, you could see 2" into the grain.
The stock was obviously not cut from the same piece.
That's the best I could do with it.
Can see into the vertical grain, but not the rest.

Best place to look for nice factory wood stocks is CDNN.
They had Winchester Model 70 AAA fancy walnut stocks for $69-$99 a few years back.
Think they used to be an $800+ option.

so dumb question, you sand/strip off the old varnish/stain, then just use BLO on it over and over?

Not a dumb question, but here is the dumb answer.
BLO is a labor of love. If I were being paid for it, probably work out to $1 an hour for the value it adds to the gun.
Just did it while watching TV.
Ya, maybe 3 coats of BLO (dry and hand rub before next), then 0000 wool, lather, rinse, repeat.
One of my first projects was a new unfinished CETME stock.
Butt stock ended up looking like part of a dining room chair.
One in the middle.
Normally look like the one on the bottom.

I don't think the question was fully addressed, GT. When you start out with a gun that has a finished stock (presumably already finished with linseed oil) you have to sand it somehwhat? Do you use the 0000 wool from the onset? i.e. on the old finish? and on subsequent coats? Or do you start off somewhat more aggressively or by totally stripping?

Doesn't matter whether it originally had a BLO finish as long as it's natural wood.
If it had a varithane or plastic coating, not messing with it. Not worth the effort for me to sand it down.
If it had really nice wood, they wouldn't have had to spray that shit on it.

Unless the previous finish is really messed up, I just use 0000 wool.
Light sanding with paper if there are are bad spots, but if the stocks are really buggered up I wont buy them.
This is just a hobby I have done for myself, and I want all of my guns to look near new when I'm done.

Usually:
Wool until I take down about half the last applied finish
Apply BLO, hand rub until you find something better to do. Let dry.
Do it another couple times. Let dry.
Repeat wool and 2-3X BLO depending on how well the finish takes.

Take pictures after awhile because at some point you're just wasting (more) time.

Here is a 1922 Remington Model 24 .22 Short I bought at a gun show for $120.
Stock just needed a little cleaning up and some BLO (as original), stock was dry, neglected, and dirty.
Bluing is all original.

Last offer I turned down was $900 (rare C model with hand checkered stock and gold bead, only one I have ever seen).
