This is really meant for those that carry (concealed or open) on a regular basis.

Do you continue to carry at home?
So when you are out carrying your lawful firearm in a lawful manner... when you arrive at home - do you continue to carry or do you put it away?

I know our homes are our sanctuary but I believe it's not the time to let your guard down. I sometimes feel more vulnerable at home than out and about. In your home - you are the target. You are directly threatened and if you have kids (you have liabilities).

One point I like to point out is the legal aspect of carrying in your own home.

Quote:
RCW 9.41.050
Carrying firearms.
(1)(a) Except in the person's place of abode or fixed place of business, a person shall not carry a pistol concealed on his or her person without a license to carry a concealed pistol.

https://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=9.41.050
Meaning - in your own home (abode) you don't need a license (aka CPL) to carry inside your own home.

Wasn't sure how to answer survey....not carried, per se, but always within reach.

I hear you... it's a situational choice. Many that live without kids or other living arrangements where those factors of hiding a firearm near by "in places" leaves a few points to still consider and the limitations as you can't control when/where (even in your own home) when the BG comes in.

Front door, back door, in your bedroom, in your garage, kitchen, watching TV... etc, etc

I could feasibly hide a firearm in all those places but the idea is like saying you carry one in your car... it's fine if you are near it but what happens when its not.

So my question to you is... do you carry outside your home?
If you do then that's something to think about.
If you don't then... that's something to think about.

There isn't a wrong answer. Its all personal choice.

I get you, and enjoy the dialog...

It is, literally, within reach.

When I'm cooking, it's on the counter, watching tv, closer than the remote, taking a shower, etc., ...

And yes, I'll carry from room to room.

I don't like it on me when I'm over the stove/oven, and relaxing in the living room, it's easier to get to than if it were onmy side.

And yes, if I get up to check a noise, or answer the door, it's with me...

That is literally - carrying. It's a bit of a different definition but you are literally carrying it.

Okay, I guess...I was thinking carry as strapped-on, but you're right.

Sorry to have split hairs :cheers2:

My XDM40 & IWB holster is so comfortable I don’t even know I’m wearing it and the wife happens to comment on it once in a while. :wink05:

I wear a firearm as a piece of functional clothing. It's a necessary part of attire all the time and every where.
The very rare times during which I need to disarm due to passing through a metal detector - I dislike it mightily.

I'm in the same boat. It may not be on me, but there is one in reach at all times.

I've been through two successful armed robberies and three other attempts. All of them were in my home (not my current home, I've lived in some bad places), so yes, I always carry at home. Not out of fear, but out of awareness that bad things happen to good people unless those good people are prepared.

Well to be honest, I took a nap this afternoon and it didn't even occur to me to take my pistol off. Didn't notice, and I slept fine. It normally sits on the bedstand at night.

Just a note on the "within reach" idea - everybody's got to do what works for them, but I strongly suggest some fight-focused training involving guns and other weapons. It (and real life experiences) can be pretty eye opening. Personally I acknowledge that if the weapon is not on my body or in my hand, chances are high that it's not really "within reach" when Murphy shows up. All of the break-in events I experienced caught us by surprise, and in the two successful cases we didn't even have time to get up out of our chairs or move around the house. Just something to keep in mind, especially if you live in a bad area.

X2

Mine is on me right now. It will come off only to reside by my head on the nightstand.

I live in a good neighborhood and I have an alarm system ... and I still feel vulnerable at home.

If I’m out and about and NOT carrying (which is five days a week, at work), I’m hit-and-miss with changing my clothes and putting on the fun when I get home.

If I’m out and about and carrying (generally anywhere but work), I always leave the gun on when I get home.
