We were driving around this weekend in Bellevue. We were stopped at a stoplight, 3rd in line. I noticed the light changed and the car in front did not move. I see this every day, idiots stuck with their heads in their cellphones. Eventually I honed the horn and we barely got through with the light yellow changing to red.

The guy in front of me in a black jeep who was between me and the inattentive driver in front must have thought my honk was directed at him. He proceeded to start flipping us off in different ways and at one point started thrusting his entire torso nearly out of the window backwards at us. We assumed he'd get over it and drive away. Suddenly I saw him stop and his reverse headlights came on, which signaled he was possibly going from drive (past reverse) into park. Luckily by this time the NEXT light we were stopped at changed and he had to move. He continued to make wild gestures out his window back at us and I decided to move over to the right lane and let him hopefully drive away. As we were coming to the next light he suddenly started slowing down and we wound up abreast. He rolled down his passenger window and started pointing and screaming at us. I had my window up so I could not hear him well. He was practically stopped keeping even with me behind a line of cars my my lane while he had tons of empty space in front of him and he wasn't leaving. Then i saw him rummaging through his center console and began getting quite concerned. I remember how Yancy Knoll died, also I had my family in the car and had to consider that as well.

I put my hand on my Sig P238 and flipped off the safety, ready to draw if necessary. Fortunately the cars stuck behind this guy were honking quite a bit and his lane was open for as far as the eye could see, and I think he may have changed his mind as to whatever he was going to do and he drove away.

Honestly I have no idea why he reacted the way he did. It was clear to everyone that the single, solitary beep of my horn I made was because the car in front of him initially was not moving and making everyone miss the light, and as soon as I honked that car in front began moving. It's possible he was having a horrible day or was mentally ill. Just another reminder that people can and will flip out over anything or even nothing at all. And given criminal recidivism and our prisons and Western State releasing nutjobs in droves, WA is being flooded with dangerous people. This is also a reminder on the need to keep a cool head and not get drawn into bad situations and seek a peaceful exit whenever possible. If I had reacted angrily to his irrational statements and actions it could have ended very badly. When you carry you do not have the luxury of indulging in reactionary emotions like anger.

do you think he would've calmed down if you had rolled your window down and told him to chill, you were honking at the car in front of him?

Be nice if we all had directional horns, but we don't.

In aviation, there are ramp hailers. I see them in Helicopters.... It's like a 200 watt all weather speaker that's mounted on the outside.....

Imagine..... HEY YOU !!! IN THE BLUE JEEP !!! HEADS UP !!! YOU HAVE A GREEN !!!

Not cheap.

I'm very careful about honking. One time, I did a brief honk, and the chick in front turned without looking, assuming she had the green. (She didn't) Not good.

The jeep should have signaled you to a low IQ and primal thought train from the driver.

Had a friend who was always getting into altercations with people. From NYC.
Pulled out of Everett Home Depot once, crossed two lanes to make a left turn on HY 99, guy thought he cut him off.
Guy was following him closely and what does he do? Pulls over, stops, rolls down his window, and pulls out his gun below window level and waits for the guy to walk up.
Ended with a reasoning of words fortunately but..................

Like I told him "You were going to shoot a guy over a fucking lane change??? Why did you stop???"

I've had this happen too, to a lesser extent. And I rarely honk but sometimes, particularly if it's a notoriously long light and I fear I won't make it thru and will then cost me 5 minutes waiting on the next iteration of greens... I do honk.

Car A is first in line, and sits. Car B is next. I'm car C or D... I honk. The car ahead of me is not the party that's the cause, but they take MASSIVE offense and go off the deep end with gestures and whatnot.

I wish folks had an IQ test to drive, truthfully. Obviously, I'm honking at the first car in the line, so simmer down moron who is #2 or 3 in line... some folks... wound too tightly.

This may seem stupid, but I notice a big difference in the WAY I honk in these situations.

A single honk, short or long, garners at least a dirty look, if not the aforementioned scenarios....

But two, short, beep-beeps, like barely hitting the horn each time, usually works out fine, and often garners a wave of thanks or sorry.

Of course, YMMV.

Alpine, you already know this, but.

Discretion is always the better part of valor. Drive away, turn away. Whatever. I am happy it turned out OK for both parties.

My wife told me that once she and her dad were getting chased down by a road rage guy. They pulled over and waited for the guy to get almost all the way to their car. Then sped away and got off at the next exit.

I agree some people are just wound way too tight for their own and everyone else's good. You can never predict the mental state of anyone else on the road. Most folks are chill, some are just plain stressed out or having a bad day, and then there's always a small mix of just plain assholes and jerks with poor impulse control and/or anger issues that just happen to play out in their driving behavior. You probably got a hold of one of those.

I've always used two short honks to get folks attention when they daydream at lights as that's considered a more friendly gesture than one long honk which is frequently interpreted by many people as a sign of irritation, impatience, or aggression. For some reason the horn in my Jetta has a lot of resistance before triggering making it very hard to do so and any honking in that vehicle tends to come out as one long honk instead. So I've gotten away from honking at other drivers except in the rare case of collision avoidance. Even then I prefer to swerve and avoid if possible instead of make noise and hold ground.

Meh. I just lean on the horn until they move.

Bitchez gotta listen to the horn, or move.

And, welcome to the world of summer heat, people on meds, and bad diets.

Makes for a lot of crazy out there.

Just the other day (Wednesday), I almost got side-swiped by an Asian driver coming off the freeway. Dumbass just decides she's going to merge, with no blinker, and without looking at all (I could see her, she didn't even glance at her mirror, much less check her blind spot). I honk and end up having to veer into the turn lane, almost into oncoming traffic, to avoid a collision. She then proceeds to shake her fist at me and start screaming at me in another language (might have been Mandarin? Not sure). And then ends up next to me at the light, where she proceeds to scream and fist-shake some more, then makes like she's going to swerve into me when the light goes green. Dafuq, bitch? You almost hit me and somehow I'm the asshole!?
