Hopefully the community can help me with a firearms shipping situation.

I have a friend who moved across the country and left a firearm at their relatives house. The relative no longer wants the firearm in the house and my friend has asked me to pick it up and ship it. I'm unable to find a clear answer online for this kind of situation. But with all the laws within WA, would I be able to pick up the firearm and ship it from a FFL here to a FFL in another state? As a note, the firearm was purchased within the last 2 years.

It's a handgun and it would be shipped to Ohio.

So is there a FFL in Ohio? Follow their guidelines as each have some specific ways they want things sent.

Then find FFL here and connect them so they can do the exchange (FFL transfer/shipping).

That is totally doable. My concern is that I did not purchase the firearm so I'm not sure if 594 would play into me shipping someone else firearm.

Ideally since 594 is all in play here. Handgun is within 2 years - ideally the relative who has it should be the one here in WA to deal with FFL here to do the transfer/mailing.

Might want to talk to FFL here in regards to what is logged for them when they take a firearm they log it in their books and prepare to ship (get copy of FFL license and address in OH) and ship so it clears them for tracking and once OH gets it they log it in their books and then “owner” does the official transfer.

This isn’t the most cheap way of doing it as it depends on fees for logging and shipping etc.

Ah yes, sorry missed that. I believe the relative is really anti-firearm and doesn't want to touch/deal with it. I'll run it by my friend to see if that option is possible.

So got to ask - why does this relative have the handgun?

They can fly or drive back with it.

They moved to Ohio rather quickly. Flew out and almost all of their belongings are in a storage unit or at the relatives house, guess the firearm wasn't a priority at the time. They are not coming back to the state until summer time.

Chat with a few FFLs here and see what they would do in regards to shipping it etc from WA standpoint.

To avoid all possible legal conflicts, dude needs to just get back to the state and take possession of the firearm and then go back to Ohio.

I’ve done this for a buddy. Have the sending and receiving FFL ready to go, go get the handgun and drop it off at the sending FFL. Done.

594 is designed for people who are attempting to circumvent the BCG process in order to transfer a pistol. You are not doing that. Yes, per the letter of the law, you are in violation, but I personally wouldn’t sweat it.

So I will default to my original answer. Talk to the FFL.

Not every FFL will agree and some will understand and others will not want to “break” the letter of the law or even come close.

Don’t do this blind. Talk to the specific FFL and get it all worked out before taking anything anywhere.

Just an example - Not every FFL will give you a copy of their FFL license.
