Post subject:  Question Regarding Dual Citizenship Gun Ownership

Hi all, does anyone know the answer to this?

I am a Canadian/American dual citizen, who has lived in Canada the majority of my life, currently living in BC.

When I was younger I lived in Washington State for a few months.

In that time I had purchased a Shotgun in WA which since has been stored at a parents house safely locked away in a safe. (in WA)

I want to make sure if I were to come down and do some target shooting with it at either the range or the woods I wouldn't be breaking any laws? I'm assuming not since I am american as well.

I have a British Columbia drivers license, both a US & Canadian passport, but my WA state ID is long expired.

Trying to keep it legal, would appreciate any insight or input.

Thanks!

Dual wielding rules!

In all seriousness, while I'm not a lawyer, you're fine. You correctly answered that you're an American citizen on your purchase paperwork. There's no proscription against shooting in permitted areas/lands, even among non-citizens. Plenty of foreign tourists to Hawaii and Las Vegas fire away to their heart's content. They can't buy anything but they can use them.

Thanks! hkcavalier

I mainly am worried about any law misinterpretations while out in the field with BC license plates on my vehicle being an attention attractant and being confused with a non-citizen alien.

And with no valid state ID, I guess it's safe to say bringing my US passport and British Columbia ID with me is enough?

Cheers!

I live near the border in Lynden WA and see many of our Canadian friends at the gun clubs and ranges in the area. I’d suggest contacting the target range your wish to shoot at for the specific requirements.

Thanks Bxc53, will do!

I am more so concerned about recreational shooting, while out camping, etc.

If (big if) anybody asks, and I doubt anybody will. Just show your US Passport.
After all we are a sanctuary state, so you can probably get a WA ID, and a CPL.

If it helps I can tell you I have taken friends to the range from several nationalities. They show some form of gov issued id (Australia, India, China, etc.) and its good to go. Sure, no gun ownership in this case.

I also saw this netflix documentary Border Security: Canada's frontline. There was this guy entering Canada with a shotgun and it was all cool because it is not a prohibited weapon for Canada.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for necro.

Technically the US does not accept dual citizenship. Either you are a US citizen or not. Other nations may claim one as a citizen but the US calls such a dual or multinationality but never dual citizenship.

I just want to see a vid of him standing on the border, american gun in one hand and canuk gun in the other blasting off rounds. Both goverments could use it to show the friendly relationship between the neighbors..... but probably wont
