I have been sitting on the parts for a .40 S&W sbr for a couple of years at this point, and I decided recently I needed to finish this thing.
I tried a number of different handguards and really did not like the way any of them looked. I finally found a small diameter, lightweight model that is not terrible, but I was toying with the idea of encircling the bottom 2/3 of it with a wood sleeve that would hopefully not heat up as fast as the aluminum, and would give a unique look. The tube on there now has a diameter of about an inch and a half, and I would not want to add too much bulk, so it would have to be a relatively thin shell.
I am not a woodworker, and I don't have the tools to make something like this even if I were. Any suggestions on who I might talk to locally about this?
This is what I have so far: (the vertical grip up front would go away)
